Everyone here at Pixelrater hopes all of you had a great time this holiday season! We sure did! We’re ramping back up and you can expect a new episode of LAN Party this Monday as usual. 🙂

PlayStation

  • Sony has moved over 53 million consoles through to consumers with a massive 6.2 million over the holidays alone. Software sales also topped 50 million up from 35 million last year.

Xbox

  • Players downloading yesterday’s Forza Horizon 3 update ending in 3.7.2 on PC got a bit more than they bargained for in the form of a 53 GB unencrypted developer build of the game. What’s worse is the unintended build revealed a whole slew of unannounced vehicles that also screwed up players’ save files if they created a new game. If players didn’t create a new save and used their existing one, then they’re in the clear when the proper build rolls out. WHOOPS!

Nintendo

  • According to a report from research company Newzoo, Super Mario run has been downloaded over 90 million times but seems to only converted roughly 3 million of those into sales. While $30 million is nothing to scoff at, it is a significantly smaller number than it could be.

  • We’re less than a week away from hearing the ins and outs of the Nintendo Switch! The company updated the official website earlier this week with a gallery and more. The big N also said the livestream taking place January 12 in Tokyo will have an English voiceover. The following day, January 13, will see a TreeHouse Live event where we’ll see an in depth look at games, games, and more games!

Industry News

  • Indie title Rime is making is launching this May across PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch. You may remember the title was initially a PS4 exclusive, but somewhere along the way Sony and Tequila Works admirably parted ways, resulting in the title going multiplatform. Yours truly will likely pick it up on Switch instead of PS4. You can watch the new trailer to get a feel for the game.

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda releases in North America on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A new trailer debuted at CES 2017. For the time being Nintendo Switch is off the table, but Producer Mike Gamble said if fans clamor for it after the console’s launch they may release it.

  • A new map for Overwatch titled Oasis released across PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Blizzard is also working on nerfing Roadhog’s hook ability. Once the tweak is made, Roadhog will only be able to hook players he can see and not ones the sphere of his hook sees, which is how it works now. Furthermore, if a player is successfully hooked and they break Roadhog’s line of sight by say, rounding a corner, it will allow them to break free.

  • Rhianna Pratchett, the woman who penned the story for the rebooted Laura Croft and it’s sequel, has left Crystal Dynamics. We here at Pixelrater wish her the best, however, I personally feel like the writing was the worst part of the reboot. The only character I cared about was
    Lara.

  • To help hype the new movie, Alien: Covenant will get a VR experience. According to a spokesperson it will be available “across all tethered platforms”, whatever the hell that means. No word on release date or price. Maybe the would have added VR to Alien Isolation instead?

  • I mentioned in one of our previous podcast episodes that Capcom was going to release six Mega Man games on iOS. Well they’re out now and from what I’ve heard then run like hot shit, just like in the promo trailer. So, uh, you should most definitely pick up the excellent Mega Man The Legacy Collection instead.

  • Nvidia announced during CES they overhauled their GeForce Now service to deliver on-demand game streaming from a GTX 1060 or GTX 1080-powered cloud to PC and Mac computers starting in March. Once registered for the service, customers get eight hours free on a GTX 1060 stream or four hours on a GTX 1080 stream. After that, it will cost $25 for 20 hours on the 1060 or 10 hours on the 1080. If you’re interested, signups are here.

  • As I’m typing this up, Tristan and Will are freaking out because apparently aliens have been discovered in Elite Dangerous. See it for yourself. Daney and I figured aliens were a part of the game from the start….
