Recap 12.18.15

his week has a lot of news so let’s get into it.

PlayStation

  • It has been revealed that the PlayStation VR is now in it’s final retail stage and will plug into a processing box roughly the size of a Nintendo Wii. This co-processing box will then plug into the PS4 and aid in rendering VR graphics and feeding data between the headset and the PS4
  • Hideo Kojima is officially done working at Konami and has revealed he is opening his own studio called….Kojima Productions. The reason I filed this under PlayStation news is because he has also confirmed he and his team are working on a PS4 exclusive game, however, they are not a Sony first party studio and will remain independent. Hideo also assured fans he will be making multiplatform games and will primarily focus on home consoles even though mobile gaming is incredibly popular in Japan.
  • Noby Noby Boy, a PS3 exclusive game, has now been beaten six years after release. What took so long? You play as Boy who accumulates points by stretching great distances. These points are spent on Boy’s love interest, Girl, to aid her in uniting the solar system’s various bodies before heading home back to Boy. It took the online community 2,489 days from start to finish to earn enough points but they have finally seen the game’s ending. Six. Years. Later.
  • The team working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake are getting help from the Kingdom Hearts team, which seems pretty obvious when you look at the latest gameplay trailer.

Xbox

  • Microsoft has released the second batch of Xbox One compatible games from the Xbox 360 library. They include the following:
    • Braid
    • Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    • Doritos Crash Course
    • Fable III
    • Halo: Reach
    • Hydro Thunder
    • Iron Brigade
    • Kane & Lynch 2
    • Motocross Madness
    • Ms. Pac-Man
    • Peggle
    • Portal: Still Alive
    • Spelunky
    • Splosion Man
    • Ticket to Ride
    • Zuma’s Revenge
  • The Banner Saga is coming to Xbox One in 2016

  • Ark Survival Evolved launched on Xbox One as a Xbox Preview title for $34.99. Those who purchase the game now will be upgraded to the final retail release at no additional cost. But perhaps the most exciting news is that Ark will support local co-op split-screen gameplay when it launches next year! You can purches it on the Xbox Store.

Nintendo

  • Cloud has been released for Super Smash Bros. Wii U
  • Weirdly enough, Napster is releasing an app for Wii U, but only in Europe.
  • Nintendo will manufacture a controller for Wii U based on the Pokkén Tournament arcade machine. As of writing it appears the controller will see a Japan only release
  • John Romero, co-founder of id Software released previously unseen footage of a PC demo for Super Mario Bros. 3 they pitched to Nintendo back in 1990. As you can imagine, Nintendo turned them down and the team at id went on to make other games instead
  • Nintendo is rumored to release a free-to-play amiibo game for both Wii U and 3DS in the upcoming year. It makes sense as Nintendo has admitted that amiibo have been purchased more as novelty collectables rather than the game enhancing figurines they originally envisioned them to be.
  • Perhaps the hottest Nintendo rumor is for a controller who’s front is a touch screen with embedded joysticks, triggers, and shoulder buttons. Add more fule to the NX rumor fire baby!

Misc Gaming

  • Crytek announced The Climb for Oculus VR
  • Valve updated their Steam Controller again. The latest update enables your controller configurations to be synced and accessed from anywhere (with an internet connection of course)
  • Bungie annoucned level and subclass boots for $29.99 after reassuring the Destiny community they wouldn’t do such a thing. Why grind and progress like everyone else from scratch when you can buy your way?
  • EA announced Unravel has a release date of February 9, 2016 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC
  • System Shock 3 has been officially revealed along with a survey inquiring about preferred platforms with an interest in VR. I can easily see this coming to PlayStation VR and PS4
  • Target and Jones Soda have announced due to overwhelming demand they are restocking Nuka Cola Quantum. Although it’s probably sold out by now.
  • Square Enix has revealed that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be split into a multi part series. The main reason for this is due to the density of the original game and the fact that the team wants to explore deeper into Midgar and other locations without condensing the game to fit the confines of a single disc
  • Psyonix, the developer of the critically acclaimed Rocket League told the Wall Street Journal they just surpassed fifty million dollars in sales. The game cost the little studio two million to make over the course of two years.
  • Coleco, makers of the ColecoVision from the 80’s announced they’re debuting a new console in 2016. It’s planned to play cartridge based games and newer 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit games.
