Recap 2.5.16

We got a beta and some release date info. Oh, and of course another Nintendo rumor but not about NX.

PlayStation

  • Jonathan Blow’s excellent puzzle adventure game The Witness has earned five million dollars between combined sales on Steam and PlayStation 4—within it’s first week of launch! While this figure is impressive, Blow mentioned the team has not yet broke even but if the game keeps selling at this pace they should make a comfortable amount to fund further games.

  • Sony announced a limited edition PS4 console bundle for Uncharted 4 releasing on April 26. The system and controller are a gray blue color with Nathan Drake’s black silhouette on the top of the system. You\’ll also get access to some bonus in-game content, including an Uncharted: Drake\’s Fortune Outfit, Golden Weapon Skin, Uncharted Points to use in the title\’s multiplayer mode, and a disc based copy of the game. The bundle will retail at $399. What’s odd is here in North America the console comes with a 500GB HDD while Europe gets a 1TB HDD. Sony will also release a similarly colored gray blue Gold series headset and the themed controller for standalone purchase.

  • While Mirror’s Edge won’t make my birthday release Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien will. The team announced the game will launch for PS4 on February 23 at $9.99 and those who bought the game previously on PS Vita will get the game for free thanks to cross-buy.

Xbox

  • Microsoft released The Community Calendar for Xbox One which provides a destination to help players easily discover hundreds of upcoming events, get involved and meet other gamers, developers, and even some of the team at Xbox.

Nintendo

  • Nintendo announced they sold over twenty million amiibo and over twenty-one and a half million amiibo cards.

  • Rumors are strong that Nintendo is working on a localized version of the hugely popular Mother 3 which has seen a Japan only release. If the rumors are true, then it would no doubt be an amazing gift to celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary.

  • Junichi Masuda, who served as a programmer on Pokémon Red and Green and created the music and sound effects, revealed that the fragile and unreliable development hardware of the period created numerous headaches for the team, and that faulty PCs very nearly thwarted the project:
\”I remember my computers always overheating and breaking down on me. I would work hard to fix them, and eventually we managed to complete the first Pokémon games, but I think I went through three or four computers by the end. I sure am glad I fixed those computers back then. If I hadn\’t, the original Red and Green games might never have come out! That\’s a scary thought!\”

Both titles will releases on the 3DS virtual console later this month.

  • Arguably the biggest news of the week is Nintendo’s information regarding how My Nintendo will work when it launches in March. You can read the breakdown (with pretty slides) on our website here.

Misc Gaming

  • DOOM 4 launches on PS4 and Xbox One May 13. Players will be able to buy the game for $60 or upgrade to a whopping $120 collectors edition that includes a 12-inch Revenant demon statue and a metal case. These collector’s editions are becoming high in price if you ask me.

  • Before the game launches on May 24, you can take Mirror’s Edge Catalyst for a test run in a closed beta for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Simply register here. No details on what section of the game you’ll be testing.

  • Warner Bros. announced the Mac and Linux versions of Batman: Arkham Knight have been cancelled. Those who purchased a copy can request a full refund through Steam.

  • The closed beta for The Division is under way and impressions are mixed. The game launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 8, 2016.

  • LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is coming June 28, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 (along with exclusive DLC), PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, and Windows PC. Check out the teaser trailer here.
