Recap 5.5.17

PlayStation

  • Horizon Zero Dawn is receiving an update next week to version 1.20 that adds multiple new features to the game’s photo mode like having Aloy look directly into the camera, change her pose, and more. There will also be features unrelated to photo mode such as a slider for camera and aim sensitivity as well as added support for a new Spanish VO pack (currently only available in America).

  • If you’re in the market for a PSVR, Gamestop is offering them with a free PlayStation Camera which ends up being $60 off (so is Amazon). Gamestop also has two other bundles with various discounts if you want to check them out.

Nintendo

  • Nicalis announced the Switch port of Cave Story+ will be adding cooperative multiplayer. It’s worth noting this won’t be ready at launch but will come in a free update.

  • Nintendo revealed DLC for Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia, and it costs more than the base game! The season pass will contain 22 pieces of content broken up across five packs that will also be sold separately. Those who opt for the season pass will save 30% compared to the cost of purchasing each pack individually.

  • Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed Animal Crossing is still set for mobile devices this year.

  • Last week we reported long time hardware and software designer Genyo Takeda was retiring from his position at Nintendo. While this is still the case, a newly translated Nintendo Q&A revealed that he would be on call for advice and guidance as a Special Corporate Advisor.

  • The entirety of the Neo Geo line of games for Switch has surpassed 200k downloads across 14 games in all regions.

Industry

  • Playtonic announced they’re responding to fan feedback with the upcoming update to Yooka-Laylee. I haven’t played the game because I changed my pledge to the Switch version, but I’ve watched enough playthroughs to determine I find the NPC dialogue annoying. Thankfully, you’ll be able to skip dialogue much quicker and limit character gibberish. There will also be adjustments to the camera and more as well as other enhancements aimed at speedrunners.

  • Kids can learn to code in Minecraft Education Edition with a new feature called Code Builder. The tool itself shows up as a small robot that kids can program to do things through learn-to-code platforms such as Tynker, Scratch and MakeCode. Those with mode advanced knowledge can bypass the in-game robot and code directly with JavaScript.

  • Darksiders III has been announced by THQ Nordic and is set to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. You can read all about it on IGN First Look.

  • Long time writer at Valve, Chet Faliszek, is leaving the company after twelve years. Faliszek’s work includes writing on the two Half-Life 2 episodes, and the Portal and Left 4 Dead games.

  • Reddit user Khemist49 discovered a gold CD ROM with the master source code from the original StarCraft in a box of Blizzard stuff he purchased on eBay. After days of debating whether or not to release it to the public or return it to Blizzard after being contacted by the company’s legal team, he chose the latter. The company thanked him with a free copy of Overwatch and $250 in store credit. He thought that was the end of it until he received a call from Blizzard who offered to fly him to Blizzcon, all expenses paid, along with sending him a big gift box full of various Diablo and Overwatch PC swag. So, uh, do the right thing I guess is my point.
