Recap 8.18.17

Nintendo

  • Nintendo has introduced details for Splatoon 2’s next Splatfest. Players can jump in from September 1-2 and pick either Flight or Invisibility as their team.

  • Overcooked is a great little game. However, it suffers some significant performance issues on Switch, often running around 20fps. Indie dev Ghost Town Games is aware of the issue and it sounds like a patch will soon be on the way to resolve the issue. They had this to say on Twitter, “Still working on the patch for frame rate at the moment, hopefully won’t be much longer now!”.

  • Shenmue III has picked up Deep Silver (Dead Island, the Metro series) as it’s publisher. The title is still set to release physically and digitally next year for PS4 and PC.

  • Switch has more exclusives in 9 months than Xbox has had in 2 years (LOLOL)

Xbox

  • Crackdown 3 has been pushed back until 2018. So now, Xbox One and the upcoming Xbox One X have jack shit when it comes to console exclusives.

Industry News

  • “Sonic Mania is the highest-rated new Sonic game in 15 years. Thank you all so much for being part of this journey with us,” reads a rather proud-sounding post penned by the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account. The recently released retro-styled platformer currently sits at a metascore of 86 over on Metacritic, but does all of this really come as much of a surprise?

  • Ubisoft held a tournament for, uh, For Honor and it was kind of a joke since there were so many exploits used.

  • A bot from startup OpenAI, backed by Elon Musk, obliterated Dota 2 pros during Valve’s annual tournament. One of them was Danylo Dendi who forfeited future matches with it after being beaten twice. He expressed surprise that a bot could outplay a human and said that it “feels a little like a human, but a little like something else.”

  • No Man’s Sky’s massive 1.3 update released across all platforms bring with it over thirty hours of story, enhanced graphics, a somewhat multiplayer aspect, and more. Hello Games also promised more is on the way in the future for NMS. You can check out Will’s stream on Twitch here.
