Recap 9.1.17

PlayStation

  • Don’t have a PlayStation VR yet? Well good news! Sony’s flagship headset is receiving a “Price Drop” of sorts as the package now includes the camera which is required to track both the Move and Dualshock 4 controllers.

  • Sony announced September’s free PlayStation Plus games which are: • inFamous: Second Son, PS4
    • Strike Vector Ex, PS4
    • Monster Jam Battlegrounds, PS3
    • Hustle Kings, PS3
    • Hue, PS Vita (Cross Buy with PS4)
    • Sky Force Anniversary, PS Vita (Cross Buy with PS4 & PS3)
There’s a bonus for PlayStation VR owners: PS Plus members in the US and Canada will also get RIGS Mechanized Combat League as a free bonus game from September 5 through November 7. This marks the first time Sony has given away a PSVR game in the PS Plus lineup, even if the deal is only for two days.

  • In case you didn’t know, a big firmware update came out last year which enabled HDR on all PS4 models—you just need a TV capable of HDR. If you have a compatible TV and plan on picking up Destiny 2 on PS4, just know it will be getting HDR support post-launch according to Bungie.

Nintendo

  • Fifa 18 for Switch is confirmed to run at 60fps in both docked and handheld modes at 1080p docked and 720p handheld

  • Miiverse will come to an official end on 11/7-11/8, depending on your region. Nintendo has released a tool allowing Miiverse users to submit a request to download all of their posts. This is a great opportunity for Miiverse artists to archive their work before it’s lost forever.

  • Fire Emblem Warriors director Hiroya Usada revealed the game will allow players to change the display settings to affect frame rate. The game runs normally at 1080p 30fps in dock mode, but players can drop the resolution to 720p and get a 60fps rate.

  • Nintendo announced they’re sunsetting the SplatNet for the original Splatoon on Wii U as of September 30.

  • A string of code in Switch’s OS is sparking rumors that Nintendo is or was testing VR on the console, which wouldn’t surprise us. The line specific line contains “IsVrModeEnabled”. At the moment the answer to that would be ‘no’.

  • Square Enix’s Hajime Tabata, the director of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition, has all but confirmed the title is coming to Switch by saying “There is certainly a chance” of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition coming to Switch.

Xbox

  • Oxenfree and Forza 5 will be Xbox One’s Games with gold offerings for the month of September

  • Minecraft Beta for Xbox One now supports mouse and keyboard controls

  • Microsoft has officially ended sales of the 1st gen Xbox one, now only offering the Xbox one S for sale in US and UK

  • Microsoft’s game streaming service, Mixer, now supports 1080p streamig from Xbox One

Industry News

  • Secret of Mana is getting a 3D remake for PS4, Vita and Steam with a planned release for February 2018.

  • EB Games (I thought they were dead) just launched a new Swap-n-Play program. For 19.99 a month, players get unlimited access to EB Games’ preowned library, one game at a time.

  • PUBG surpassed Dota 2 as the Steam game with the most concurrent users on 8/27, peaking at over 860k (to Dota 2’s 842k)

  • Age of empires IV is currently in development for PC

  • Road Rage is getting a reboot for ps4, xbox one, and PC with a release date of October 14 at $30

  • Sonic Mania is out now on PC through Steam and while the game itself is receiving wide praise, Sega is getting pushback for using the much loathed DRM software Denuvo. Buyers of Mania on PC found the game was unplayable offline which sparked outrage. Sega has since updated the game with offline support and said the DRM wasn’t the cause for the issue.

  • Wouldn’t it be neat if you could play VR games from your PC on your smartphone? Yeah, I’m not sure either, but it will be possible thanks to Zeiss VR One Connect. There’s definitely potential for lag issues and the headset won’t support room scale. It will be available at Best Buy and Game Stop in Q4 2017 for $129.

  • Bethesda’s paid mods debuted in Fallout 4 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

  • So this is weird: Square Enix and Ubisoft have announced that this month will mark the beginning of crossovers between Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy. Yup, really. “This collaboration is the result of being huge fans,” Ubisoft Montreal game driector Ashraf Ismail says on the UbiBlog. “There’s a lot of respect between the two teams and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the opportunity to pay homage to each other’s work.”

  • Gamestop tried their hand at making a commercial for Destiny 2 and it’s so very very bad. I mean, “how the hell did this get approved?!” kind of bad. I’ve embedded the embarrassment below.
