Recap 1.22.16

We have some release dates as the 2016 year kicks off along with some other news.

PlayStation

  • The Witness has a confirmed release date of January 26—next Tuesday! The price will be $39.99 which is significantly more expensive than Jonathan Blow\’s last game Braid released for. Jon points out that The Witness will have around 70 hours of gameplay.

  • Sony is sending messages out to PlayStation Plus subscribers who were affected by the 12 hour long outage on January 4. You will see a message on your PS4 with a code for an extra day of Plus. All codes must be redeemed by March 31, 2016.

  • Uncharted co-created Neil Druckmann stated that Uncharted 4 will not be like Mass Effect and will only offer a few dialogue trees. He said there is a very specific story and a very specific ending.

  • After arriving on PS4 in 2014 and PS3 in 2015 Oddworld New \’n\’ Tasty makes its way to PS Vita with full cross-buy and cross-save support between all three platforms

Xbox

  • Curiously The Witness has been rated by the ESRB for Xbox One, although the developer said he currently has no plans of releasing on the platform.

  • The Xbox One team stated they will no longer release Xbox 360 compatible titles in a big batch once a month, but will instead release them as they become available.

Nintendo

  • The newest rumor is that Nintendo NX will be able to interface with PS4 along with the confirmed PC\’s and smartphones. It is speculated the communication between the two consoles will be similar to how  Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn  can be played cross platform between PS4 and PC.

  • Here\’s another one for the Nintendo NX rumor mill. A recent survey through GFK, a client of Nintendo, claimed the system will be capable of 4K/60fps video playback and 900p/60fps gameplay. Take this with a large grain of salt.

  • Final Fantasy Explorers releases next Tuesday on Nintendo 3DS for $39.99

Misc Gaming

  • The movie Assassin\’s Creed has wrapped shooting and is entering post production. The film is slated for a December 21 release

  • It has been announced that Brooklyn had to be removed from the initial retail release of The Division. The game is massive in scale with a 1 to 1 recreation of midtown Manhattan, so I\’m not surprised it got cut for now

  • NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat XL, a version of Mortal Kombat X complete with all post launch DLC. The game releases on PS4 and Xbox One March 1 in North America and March 4 in Europe.

  • Life is Strange now has a physical limited edition release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This limited edition includes all five episodes as well as an art book and 14 licensed tracks from the game’s official soundtrack along with 8 tracks from the game’s composer Jonathan Morali.

  • Square Enix announced a publishing partnership with Milestone S.r.l, one of the world’s leading developers and publishers specializing in the racing genre, to bring titles to North America and Latin America starting with Sébaastien Loeb Rally EVO on March 15.

  • Brian Horton, director of Rise of the Tomb Raider has left Crystal Dynamics and will be moving him and his family back to Southern California as he takes a job at Infinity Ward
