Recap 11.27.15

Hello! Welcome to Recap, a look back on the week\’s gaming news. First up is something for Dying Light fans. Techland\’s original idea was to sell Dying Light\’s season pass for $19.99 and the first expansion The Following for $14.99 separately. After months of work it became apparant to the team that there was way more content and value jam packed into the first expansion than originally planned and because of this the prices are going up. This won\’t affect people who already own the season pass, only people who buy it starting December 8, 2015. The new pricing will be $29.99 for the season pass and $19.99 for the standalone expansion, so if you want either one grab it before the price rises.

In other news Sony announced back in March that PlayStation 4 sold 20.2 million consoles which is an impressive feat. This past week the tech giant proclaimed the number has skyrocketed to a whopping 30.2 million PS4\’s sold. That\’s staggering! And analysts thought the console industry was dead. Ha! Also in the world of PlayStation a developer going by the name Twisted released an unofficial beta app that lets you remote play PS4 games to your PC for $10 which you can find here. As you can imagine this caused a frenzy among PlayStation fans who took to Twitter (where else?) to ask the wonderful Shuhei Yoshida if Sony planned on releasing an official (most importantly free) remote play app for PC to which he suprisingly replied below.

Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC, and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac. 😀

I love that man. Perhaps the biggest news of the week is Digital Foundry\’s discovery of a PS2 emulator built into the PS4. This seems to be a feature that snuck inside the 3.0 firmware update in preparation for the Star Wars Battlefront bundle that comes with four classic Star Wars titles, all from the PS2 era. How can we tell it\’s hardware level emulation and not repackaged digital classics running in a wrapper? Well, for starters there\’s PS4 OS level handling of virtual PS2 memory cards as well as a prompt indicating the start and select buttons have been remapped to the Dualshock 4 touchpad\’s left and right sides. Sources claim that the emulator runs the older Star Wars games at a constant 1080p 60fps, which to be honest, there\’s no reason why it can\’t. Not only that but Sony seems to have put their previously discovered patent for adding trophies to older PlayStation titles to use as all four Star Wars games have them. While I have my hopes up that one of my personal favorite PS2 titles TimeSplitters 2 will make the jump to PS4, I can\’t help but feel like Sony will use this opportunity to resell old PS2 games similar to how they do now. Sony would make more money this way because they would have to put very little work into bringing titles over from a technical standpoint now that an emulator is created. Still I hold out hope that I can just pop my old PS2 games in and play them in all their upscaled 1080p silky 60fps glory with or without trophies.

And finally for some Nintendo related news, YouTube channel Gaming Historian released an in depth look at Satoru Iwata\’s life in a new video titled The Life of Satoru Iwata. I really suggest you give it a watch. Also, and to my surprise, Target released a statement saying the Wii U was the top selling video game console for them on Black Friday. Way to go big N! Now let\’s move on to the NX!

These were some of the big highlights for this past week. Have a nice weekend and you next week. 🙂
