Recap 8.25.17

PlayStation

  • Following last year’s successful Kickstarter campaign for Fear Effect Sedna, French studio Sushee’s next project is a complete remake of the 2000 original. Fear Effect Reinvented is coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC next year.

  • Hot on the heels of the 1.30 update which added an ‘Ultra Hard’ difficulty, Guerrilla Games just released a 1.32 update that adds a much easier ‘Story’ difficulty for those who want to get immersed in the game’s narrative and explore it’s world without being weary of difficult combat encounters.

Nintendo

  • Japan’s Pokémon tournament was over 7 days with 2M attendees who caught over 120M pokemon….with zero problems. The game’s latest update includes data for third generation Pokémon.

  • You can now pay for games off Wii U, 3DS, and Switch’s eShop with PayPal…..seriously….what’s this ‘Wii U’ people speak of?!

  • Splatoon 2 received a sizable update with may changes including balances and fixes for both multiplayer as well as Salmon Run. The first thing I noticed after starting the game back up is that Inkopolis seems to run at a solid 60fps—either that or it’s a non-stuttery 30fps like it was before the 1.2 update.

  • Pokken Tournament DX will be getting a demo on the Switch eShop in the near future.

  • Rocket League on Switch will receive exclusive cars styled after Mario, Luigi, and Samus, Psyonix revealed. The vehicles will be free, but need to be unlocked through gameplay.

  • Ubisoft revealed a season pass for the yet to be released Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. It will launch alongside the game and include the content listed below on day one as well as new story content in 2018.

  • 8 unique steampunk weapons will be available at the launch of the game, each one with its own stats and are exclusive for season pass owners.

    • This autumn, players will be able to test their skills with new solo challenges, or with a friend, through additional co-op maps.
  • Fast RMX will be getting a free update in September which will add 6 new tracks and 2 new cups to win. Tristan loved it in his review for Switch , so I’m sure this will give him a reason to return to the track.

  • Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata raised some eyebrows when he kind of announced FF XV would be coming to Switch during Gamescom. During a panel, he had the following to say:

You asked the question, what other things do we have planned in the future? We can’t give you any complete, solid details right at the moment but for our policy writers we very much do want to move out and do as much as we can with the game, with the franchise. There’s another certain console out there people may be thinking of; sounds little bit like you guys, your name, “Twitch”… I think we’ll just leave it there.
It’s worth noting this statement is coming close after the announcement of Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition for iOS and Android. So it’s entirely possible Square Enix is bring that version of the game to Nintendo’s hot selling console.

Xbox

  • Xbox live went down for over five hours on Tuesday night. Unless online was disabled, completely, many users were unable to launch any apps or games on their Xbox one. This is exactly what people were afraid of when Microsoft first spoke of online requires consoles. Tristan was ultra pissed but found a reason to play Spelunky for a while so it was all good.

  • During this past week at Gamescom, Rare and Microsoft have confirmed Sea of Thieves will be cross-play between Xbox and PC players. Our very own Tristan is in the private beta and, while he’s bound by a NDA, his comments to us here at Pixelrater tell us he’s really smitten by the title. He’s Tristan, the smitten kitten.

  • Microsoft put the rumors of an enhanced version of ReCore to rest by announcing ReCore The Definitive Edition. The reworked game contains the inclusion of the fifth robot frame that was missing from the original release. However, current owners of the standard edition will receive the DLC for free, which is welcome news for anyone who bought the game last year. Missing the tank robot felt more like content ripped out from launch rather than content added in DLC. Perhaps the best news pertaining to ReCore is that The Definitive Edition is coming to Xbox Game Pass next month, so for anyone who’s wary of buying, that might be a nice way to play it instead.

  • Is your Xbox One dashboard too dark? Well good news! The UI is being given a fresh, much lighter coat of paint in an upcoming update. I mean, thats great and all, but MS still hasn’t come up with a layout they’re happy with. Regardless, I always like when I’m given the option to choose a dark or light UI.

  • PUBG (Playerunknown Battlegrounds) has been confirmed as a console exclusive for Xbox One.

Industry News

  • Amazon has quietly removed their two week window where gamers could save 20% off of new games. The company’s discount is now only available with preorders.

  • Tekken is coming to iOS and Android complete with story mode, multiplayer, 100 unlockable characters, and more.

  • Bioware announced Mass Effect Andromeda will not receive any single player content, a first for the series.

  • Hal Labratory (creators of Kirby and Smash Bros) is creating a mobile games division called Hal Egg with their first game due out this fall.

  • Overwatch’s D.VA is getting character changes in the future. Players can expect her Shield to be nerfed by around 50%. That’s a lot, but she will also gain the ability to use her weapons while hovering, and will also get a new “Micro-missiles” ability. Mercy will also be receiving big changes to her character like Resurrect becoming bumped to a slow recoving second ability and her ultimate becoming “Valkyrie”, giving her the ability to fly. Her beams will also reach further and heals will chain between groups.

  • Bioshock is getting a 10th anniversary edition which will include a copy of the Bioshock Collection and an 11” Big Daddy statue…..for $200.

  • SNES classic preorders went up on BestBuy the night of August 21-22 and ended in disaster as you probably expected.

  • Gwent is getting a pro league with an awards pot upwards of 850k. Daney is expected to drop out of the professional world shortly to chase her dream of being a Gwent pro.

  • Bethesda announced release dates for their VR Projects:

    • Skyrim VR – 11/17 – $60 (PSVR)
    • Doom VFR – 12/1 – $30 (PSVR, Vive)
    • Fallout 4 VR – 12/12 – $60 (Vive)
  • Frontier Developments, the team behind the space exploration sim Elite Dangerous, announced Jurassic World Evolution coming in 2018. The title is a simulator where players build their own dino park and hope everyone doesn’t die. It’s essentially a spiritual successor to Jurassic Park Operation Genesis which released in 2003.

  • In a weird move, owners of Shield TV can pick up Metal Gear 2 HD for $9.99. The game runs at 720p 60fps. So…..yeah.

  • Square Enix announced Secret of Mana is getting a full 3D remake wiht boiceover for PS4, PS Vita, and Steam. The game is set to release this coming February.
