I remember playing the Moss back on the original PSVR. To this day, the diorama style of gameplay is one of my favorites to experience in VR. It’s no surprise then, that I was excited when I heard the Moss and Moss II Bundle would be releasing for PS VR2, bringing along better lighting and textures at a higher resolution, revised controls, and more. As is no surprise to our readers, I absolutely love VR, and so I was drawn to the unique concept of playing as a tiny mouse hero, complete with a tiny sword and tiny shield battling (not always) tiny enemies. I can confidently say that this bundle delivers a captivating and magical experience.

In Moss, players assume the role of the Reader, a god-like character who embarks on a journey alongside Quill, a courageous mouse with a heartwarming personality. The game blends traditional platforming elements with VR interactions for puzzle solving as well as fighting enemies. Players can not only guide Quill through lush environments but also manipulate the world around her. The level design is superb, featuring intricate puzzles, hidden secrets, and clever challenges that require the player’s involvement to progress. I always love when a developer rewards my curiosity when it comes to collectibles and hidden items. Interacting with Quill and assisting her on her quest creates a bond that is surprisingly emotional and helps to further drive you deeper into the story. I just can’t resist her peering up at me, eyes sparking full of joy, requesting the highest of fives. I give her one. Every. Time.

Building upon the success of the first game, Moss II continues the tale of Quill in an equally mesmerizing fashion. The latest title in the series expands upon the lore and introduces new characters, environments, and challenges. Sometimes, sequels try too many new game mechanics or veer too far from the original. I’m happy to report the gameplay remains just as engaging, further refining the platforming mechanics and introducing exciting new gameplay elements. The continuation of Quill’s story is handled with care, allowing players to witness her growth and face new dangers together.

One of the standout aspects of both games is the beautiful atmospheric design. The world of Moss is artfully rendered, with lush environments, detailed character models, and moody lighting that brings each scene to life. The attention to detail from the art team is evident in every nook and cranny, making the game a joy to explore. The visual style has a whimsical charm that captures the essence of a fairy tale, immersing players in a magical realm that feels alive.

Accompanied by a melodic soundtrack, the audio design of Moss and Moss II pairs nicely with what you’re seeing as the player. The sound effects, ambient noises, and voice acting are all top notch here and shine thanks to Sony’s 3D audio engine.

While both games are a joy to play, it’s important to note that the games are relatively short in terms of overall playtime, clocking in at around ten hours or so combined. With that said, the quality of the experience more than compensates for its duration. I’d rather pay for a memorable polished experience than pay the same amount for a game busting at the seams with filler. kind of how I like my crab cakes—more meat less filler.

The Moss and Moss II bundle is a must-have for any VR enthusiast looking for a unique and enchanting adventure. The charming protagonist, engaging gameplay, beautiful visuals, and fantasy storytelling make this bundle a standout for PS VR2. Whether you’re an experienced VR player or new to the medium, the world of Moss will transport you to a place of wonder and leave you with cherished memories of a truly magical journey.
