Weekly Retro: 5.28 – 6.1

PlayStation

  • Hot off the heels of E3 2018 is the World Cup, and you’ll be able to watch all 33 matches through your PSVR as the BBC plans to trial the latest technology. You’ll be able to witness the action via a virtual hospitality box or among the fans behind either of the goals.

  • June’s PlayStation Plus lineup has been revealed:
    * XCOM 2 (PS4)
    * Trials Fusion (PS4)
    * Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (PS3)
    * Squares (PS Vita)
    * Atomic Ninjas (PS Vita)

Nintendo

  • Nintendo is releasing yet another system based off of Zelda. This time, it’s a 2DS XL sporting a Hylian Shield look, and we’re sure Tristan is dying to have one. It will be available July 2 for $159.

  • There was a Pokémon event held recently which had some big reveals.
    – Pokémon Quest is a free-to-start game available now for Switch and later on iOS.
    – Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Go Let’s Go Eevee will launch for Switch on November 16. They look to be somewhere between a traditional 3DS title like X and Y mashed with GO’s style of catching ‘mons. You’ll be able to play with a single Joy-Con or hand another to a friend for local multiplayer (player 2 acts as a support role). The new titles will support the transferring of Pokémon to the mobile GO and visa versa—but only once. The nitty gritty details have yet to be released, but we’re expecting to maybe hear more at E3.
    – A new hardware accessory called the Pokéball Plus will launch alongside the new games and can be used with Pokémon GO as well. The peripheral has a small joystick and will be all you need to play Let’s GO. You can also use a single Joy-Con if you prefer.

  • HORI just announced what is definitely one of the weirdest accessories out there for the Switch: a noise-dampening cover for Switch compatible. The idea is to use this cover when you want to play karaoke games like Let’s Sing 2018 or Karaoke JOYSOUND, but don’t want to disturb others in the house with your singing.

  • Hyper Light Drifter will have a new more powerful double sword as well as a new area to explore exclusively on Switch. The title has been confirmed to run at 60fps at 1080p when docked.

  • Four new weapons have gone live in Splatoon 2 and they are the Custom Dual Squelcher, Rapid Blaster Elite Deco, Undercover Brella, and Carbon Roller Deco.

Xbox

  • Microsoft has let go of the majority of it’s support staff who ran the @XboxSupport Twitter handle, accounting for twelve people being let go. While it’s no big number, the fact that they have been replaced by free fan-based Xbox Ambassadors who they trained is kind of shitty.

Industry News

  • Atari’s co-founder, Ted Dabney, has passed away this week.

  • PUBG Corp. is officially taking Epic Games to court to sue them over battle royals similarities while releasing the following statement,

    We have filed the suit to protect our copyright in January
    Sounds like a load of bullshit to me. You can copyright a style of gameplay.

  • I should make an “I Don’t Know Why” section for the Weekly Bit just so I can file stories like this one in it. Intellivision announced a new console will release October 1 which is said to “be well under $200, come pre-loaded with classic Intellivision games, and support HDMI.” There will also not be any physical games released, although it is unclear of digital games will be made available, but we doubt it.

  • Just Cause and Max Max developer Avalanche Studios is being acquired by Nordisk Film, with the media company moving from minority shareholder to full owner. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Avalanche CEO Pim Holfve called it “the right offer, at the right time, from the right company.” The studio will still retain its “creative independence.”

  • You just can’t trust Walmart with your unannounced games anymore. A few weeks ago the retailer outed the previously unannounced RAGE 2 and now there at it again with Team Sonic Racing. I actually enjoyed the previous Sonic Racing title, so I’m interested in this new one for Switch. Here’s what the game’s description said:

    Team Sonic Racing combines the best elements of arcade and fast-paced competitive style racing as you face-off with friends in intense multiplayer racing. Race together and work together as a team by sharing power-ups and speed boosts. Take control of your racing style – Choose from 3 distinct character types and unlock game changing vehicle customization options to suit your racing style. Speed up. Gear Up Team Racing at Sonic Speed!
