Weekly Retro: 10/22 – 10/26

PlayStation

  • More details have come out regarding Sony’s PSN name change service, and none of it is good. In an email sent to beta testers, the platform holder warned of the following potential outcomes:
    • lose paid DLC
    • lose in game currency
    • lose all leaderboard progress
    • lose game save progress
    • lose trophy progress
    • break games, specifically multiplayer ones
    • reverting back to your original ID will not fix the above issues
Well fuck. Uhhhhhh, I’d say this is 100% not worth it kids.
  • The United States and Europe are getting PS4’s Greatest Hits line of popular PS4 games at discounted prices. In the US, games like Dying Light, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition join the roster, while Europe gets the likes of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. Both territories are also getting Until Dawn and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. The new wave of games joins PlayStation Hits on 2nd November.

Xbox

  • During an earnings Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that the company’s popular Xbox Games Pass would be making it’s way to PC.

Nintendo

  • Uniqlo is teaming up with Nintendo to create Pokémon themed apparel set to release in Summer 2019.

  • Nintendo has partnered with Institute of Play to bring Labo to elementary classrooms across the US. The program will target 2K kids ages 8-11

  • It’s been reported Switch accounts for a whopping 82% of all sales for Starlink in the UK. That’s no small percentage!

  • A major new feature is on its way to Pokémon Go: Adventure Sync will at long last allow players to continue tracking their walking distance without having the game active or a Pokémon Go Plus tracker.

Industry News

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is out. If the listening stats for our upcoming podcast episode drop off a cliff, we know why and we aren’t angry.

  • Rockstar Games revealed they will release a companion app on iOS and Android to coincide with the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. When the app is paired directly with a console, users will have the ability to completely remove the UI on the TV and beam it inside the app. This includes things like locating quests, setting waypoints, and reading journal entries.

  • Popular indie farming sim, Stardew Valley, is now available worldwide for iOS and Android for $7.99.

  • AtGames, maker of the Flashback consoles, has been firing back at consumers in a very unfriendly PR kind of way after they discovered the games advertised on the box were the superior arcade versions while the final retail hardware came with the inferior NES version of those games. To make matters worse, the review units sent to press had more powerful hardware that played those arcade versions.

  • Bethesda released a blog post warning gamers that Fallout 76 will have “spectacular issues’ that the team needs “help finding” and for fans to give them “advice on what’s important to fix”. I dunno, how about you release a finished product that’s ready to go?

  • Oculus’s co-founder, Trexler Irbe, has left Facebook amid reports of the Rift 2 being cancelled. The issues seems to be that Irbe wants to push VR as far as the technology can go while Facebook wants to dumb it down as much as possible for mass consumption. In my opinion, the latter needs to happen somewhat for the former to really work, because VR is too expensive for most people.

  • We’ve seen some asinine limited edition versions of games to date hovering at $300 or more, but this latest from good old Capcom takes the cake. Those in Japan can nab a copy of Devil May Cry 5 with a replica of one of three available jackets from the game’s three stars for the reasonable cost of eight thousand dollars!

  • In a bizarre bit of news, Intellivision announced they’re re-entering the home console market in 2020 with a new piece of hardware dubbed Amico. The unit will be priced at around $149-179 with all games being exclusive to the console and costing between $3.00 – $8.00. Each controller will also feature the iconic omni-directional disc along with a full color touchscreen. I bet this thing never makes it to the light of day.

Word on the Street

  • A handful of online retailers are listing Subnautica’s release on PS4 as December 7. Will and I have talked in length about how amazing that game is. For now, it’s currently available as a retail release on Steam and on Xbox One (albeit in game preview).
