Nintendo Account Signups & Miitomo Preregistration Now Live

Nintendo opened up registration for Nintendo Accounts to those of us outside of Japan this morning. You can create a new My Nintendo account from scratch or sign up with an existing Nintendo Network ID as well as a Twitter, Facebook, or Google Plus (who the hell uses that?!) login. Grab your nickname or handle by signing up here.

You can also sign up to be notified when Miitomo launches next month. Preregistration can be done here and doing so grants you Platinum Coins that will be redeemable for Nintendo goods through My Nintendo which wil lauch along side Miitomo. Here\’s what Scott Moffitt, NOA\’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing had to see about Miitomo:

“Miitomo makes it easy for people to express themselves and interact with their friends in new and fun ways. Preregistering now is the best way to be among the first to get in on the fun when Miitomo launches next month.”

I\’ve compiled a small FAQ below.

What is a Nintendo Account?
Nintendo Account is a brand new account system for everything Nintendo related. It can can be linked with your existing Nintendo Network ID and/or logins for Twitter, Facebook and Google+. Nintendo has already stated that a Nintendo Account won\’t be mandatory for Miitomo users to download the app, but is encouraging preregistration with Platinum Coins to make setting up a Nintendo Account an attractive option. It\’s also been stated that, at some point in the future, a Nintendo Account will be needed for smart device apps.

What is My Nintendo? Where did Club Nintendo go?
Club Nintendo was shut down last year with My Nintendo effectively replacing it. The service will launch next month alongside Miitomo. Like it\’s predecessor, My Nintendo is a rewards program but it aims to go beyond the previous rewards system to offer a \”more comprehensive service that rewards users for interacting with Nintendo products and services in a variety of ways\” rather than being heavily survey focused like Club Nintendo was. In addition to discounts and rewards, the service will include the global roll-out of eShop purchases online in a web browser, with those games then automatically downloading on your hardware similar to what Xbox and PlayStation have been doing this generation. You\’ll need a Nintendo Account to be eligible for the My Nintendo rewards service and can sign up here.

What is a Miitomo?
Oh Nintendo and they\’re wild naming conventions. Miitomo is the first smartphone app from the Nintendo and DeNA partnership. Miitomo is essentially a social communication app that will use Mii characters. Your friends will be asked random questions like what their favorite food or music genre is and they\’ll answer. You can then respond with photos or text based replies. It\’s all about discovering new things and sparking conversation. If you don\’t have a Mii you can create one using a photo or create one from scratch within the app. Those who have an existing Mii on a Nintendo 3DS/2DS or Wii U will be able to import it into Miitomo by scanning in a QR code. The app will be free-to-start but will contain microtransactions through \’Miitomo Coins\’— an in-app currency that you can earn in-game or buy as an in-app purchase. The app will release on iOS and Android and you can preregister with a Nintendo Account to receive your Platinum Coins bonus here.
