Overwatch – 24th Hero Orisa Revealed!

The Overwatch community has been waiting with baited breath for the presumed arrival of the 24th hero on the roster to arrive this week. In a Developer update posted this afternoon, Jeff Kaplan takes us into a bit of detail on the new backstory of Orisa, Overwatch’s newest Tank class hero!

Orisa is a repurposed OR15 Security defense Robot used for the protection of Mumbani after the Omnic crisis. According the Orisa origin story, they functioned well for a while and then were completely destroyed when Doomfist attacked the New Mumbani Airport. The local young tinkerer Eli Oladele (introduced in another prior developer update) decided to overhaul one of the bots. She reprogrammed it and gave it a heart, bringing to life a new breed of hero. Orisa plays as an anchor/support-tank, and is a nice in-between for players looking for a new support class hero that can take some of the pressure off of the existing tanks like Rein and Winston. Orisa is a fresh new option, and is presently available in the PTR. Featured below are the the origin story, and the latest developer update with Jeff Kaplan, as well as hero specs!

Hero details:

Role: Tank
Difficulty: 2 Stars (out of 3)

“Orisa serves as the central anchor of her team, and defends her teammates from the frontline with a protective barrier. She can attack from long range, fortify her own defenses, launch graviton charges to slow and move enemies, and deploy a Supercharger to boost the damage output of multiple allies at once.”

Ability: Fusion Driver
Automatic projectile cannon. Delivers sustained damage, but movement is slowed while activated. Similar to D.Va’s particle cannons, the fusion driver fires rapid shots in a tight radius with an expanding cone of destruction the farther away you are from the target. Movement speed is slowed significantly, making you a bigger target while firing.

Ability: Fortify
temporarily reduces damage and cannot be affected by action-impairing effects.
E.g. She can take a Reinhardt Hammer Down to the face and keep walking when effect is applied.

Ability: Halt
Orisa launches a graviton charge which can be detonated on demand, slowing nearby enemies and pulling them towards their doom. The charge does not have a gravity effect applied to it, but rather flies in the direction fired until triggered or off the map.

Ability: Protective barrier
Can throw a stationary barrier (similar to Reinhardt) which protects her and allies from enemy fire. The shield deploys in the direction it was fired, and stays deployed until damaged or the timer expires.

Ability: Supercharger
Deploys a device to increase damage inflicted by allies within her line of sight.
(Works like a tether that maintains a line of sight connection to enemy teammates and breaks connection after the timer expires or it is damaged to the point of destruction)

Orisa will be joining the full release sometime later this month, but is currently available to test in the PTR now!

Let us know your thoughts about Orisa and her new abilities and what she might do for the meta in the 4th season! I for one, am always excited about Overwatch updates.
