  • There have been many (or so it seems in today’s social media echo chamber) reports of bricked Switch consoles using third party docks after the 5.0 update. Specifically the dock manufactured by Nyko. All this publicity has made both Nintendo and Nyko release official statements. First up, Nintendo:

“Nintendo (recommends) that Switch owners only buy officially licensed Switch products . . . Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process. They might not work at all with our game systems, and they could have compatibility problems with certain games, the Nintendo Switch system itself, and other licensed accessories and peripherals.”
    Andy Nyko:
“(Nyko is) aware of the issue some Portable Docking Kit owners are facing after updating the firmware on their Nintendo Switch to version 5.0. Though further testing is still required to determine the exact root cause of the problem, we believe it is related to the way the Switch handles AV output for an external TV/monitor while the console is docked on the Portable Docking Kit.”

Industry News

  • Square Enix announced Dragon Quest XI is coming to PS4 and Steam September 4 of this year. The studio also confirmed the title is making its way to Switch in NA and Europe, but the release has “a long way to go until release.” They also confirmed the 3DS version will remain a Japan only title.

  • After being pressed by the game’s fanbase, CD Projekt Red updated PS4 Pro fans on the status on the HDR patch for The Witcher III (which is live on Xbox One X). According to the team, they ran into a few bugs that need to be squashed before release, but assured fans it’s still coming.

  • Go to hell…….in 4K because DOOM is getting a 4K patch for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X users tomorrow. No other details have been announced and it is unclear if the game will run in native 4K or some kind of checkerboard pattern.
