PlayStation Plus Getting a Price Hike

It has just been announced on the PlayStation Blog that Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription will see it’s first price hike since 2010. Starting September 22, 2016 the prices will be $59.99 USD/ $69.99 CAD for a year, $24.99 USD/$29.99 CAD for three months, and $11.99 CAD in Canada, and remain $9.99 USD in the U.S.

Personally, I understand why PS Plus is costing more as licensing deals only get more expensive, similar to Netflix. Back before Sony started charging for PS Plus there were no monthly free games, as disappointing as some of the offerings may be as of late. Free games was a feature Sony threw in to sweeten the blow for what was once a free service last generation. As expected, Microsoft had no choice but to create Games with Gold for their platform to appease their fanbase. Everybody wins with free games.

With that said, I would like see some changes. I don’t ever fire up my PS3 any more and I feel like giving out free games for your last generation platform is a waste. Especially since they aren’t backwards compatible with PS4. It seems like Sony has run out of ideas for the Vita, as the console maker has resorted to old PSP game offerings for the past few months. I’d love to see PS3 and Vita both dropped from Plus at this point to focus on PS4 and the upcoming PlayStation VR platform. Hell, give a us free monthly movie rental or something. What are your thoughts? Are you happy with PS Plus? And if not, what differences would you like to see?
