Xbox

  • Scalebound has been cancelled. Well shit.

  • Microsoft will be rolling out an update to Windows 10 in early 2017 dubbed the Creators Update. One of the features will be a new “Game Mode” that is said to improve the performance of both traditional Win32 games as well as new UWP (Universal Windows Platform) games.

Nintendo

  • As you can see in the image above, it appears the Nintendo Switch will support multiple user accounts per system and ship with a dark theme (joy!). The image origianlly came from indie dev Nicilas and also showed two of their other titles are making their way to Switch—Cave Story and 1001 Spikes which were previously unannounced. The image was taken down within the hour, but of course we snagged it. 😉

  • Nintendo’s Kit Ellis told Business Insider there will be no media capabilities when Switch launches, including Netflix. We’re confident streaming content will make it’s way to the console in time however.

  • It has been confirmed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will run at 900p on Switch rather than 1080p. Like I said in my Switch Hands-On video, if that’s a big deal to you, well then, don’t be that person.

  • Super Mario Run will cross the finish line on Android this March.

  • Nintendo held a Fire Emblem Direct where they announced Fire Emblem Warriors, coming to new 3DS and Switch this Fall. They also announced Fire Emblem Heroes coming to iOS February 2. As expected, good old Tristan breaks it all down for you in yet another great article.

  • At Switch’s NYC event, Reggie Fils-Aime told Polygon that Breath of the Wild will be the last Nintendo game for Wii U. The company plans on keeping online services like the eShop and servers for Splatoon and Mario Maker online for a while. But with that said, the writing’s on the wall for the ailing system.

  • According to a video from Eurogamer, the ROM used for Super Mario Bros on the Wii appears to have been lifted from the internet. You know, from one of those ROM sites Nintendo purged their IP from.

  • Starting January 23, Japanese My Nintendo members will be able to order their Switch consoles with whatever color combination of Joy-Cons and straps they want.

  • Limited Run Games has helped bring indie darlings to both PS4 and PS Vita in physical form since 2015 (in limited runs of course). Now, the company has revealed it plans on going all out on Nintendo Switch.

Industry News

  • A new report has surfaced about the departure of Playdead co-founder Dino Patti’s departure from the company. According to Danish newspaper Borsen, Patti and Playdead’s other co-founder Arnt Jensen were at odds about which of the two actually owned the rights to the company’s games. Things escalated quickly until Patti was forced out of the company and forced to sell his 49% stake in the company for 7.2 million.

  • A fresh new studio called Strange New Things has been formed by ex-devs from The Witcher, Dying Light, and Hitman. The studio is currently underway on their first project, although there are no details to speak of at the moment.

  • We all remember the drawn out falling out between Hideo Kojima and Konami. Well it turns out Kojima has been poaching a lot of the top talent from Konami for his studio, Kojima Productions. That’s great news because, fuck Konami.

  • Awesome Games Done Quick closed out it’s charitable event for the Prevent Cancer Foundation by raising a total of $2.2 million dollars—that’s awesome!

  • PS4 and Xbox One owners can try Watch Dogs 2 free for three hours. According to Ubisoft the demo contains “full access to all the game’s features, including its seamless co-op and multiplayer,”. That’s excellent news and I personally love the game, as it was one of top five from last year.

  • Yacht Club Games, the creators of the damn fine game Shovel Knight, said in a Tweet that they’re working on a new game in 2017. Expect it to be good.
