Recap 3.2.18

PlayStation

  • Guerilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn celebrated its first birthday this week as well as nearly 8M in sales.

  • This is perhaps the best PlayStation Plus offering of games to date. In March players will receive the following:

    • Bloodborne, PS4
    • Ratchet & Clank, PS4
    • Legend of Kay, PS3
    • Mighty No. 9, PS3 (Cross Buy with PS4)
    • Claire: Extended Cut, PS Vita (Cross Buy with PS4)
    • Bombing Busters, PS Vita (Cross Buy with PS4)
  • Sony announced PS Plus will no longer offer PS3 or PS Vita games in 2019. Both platforms were supported way longer than I figured they would be—especially Vita!

  • David Cage and Quantic Dream announced their latest project, Detroit: Become Human, will release on PS4 May 25 of this year.

  • Sony reiterated its commitment to first-party franchises as part of an organisational reshuffle that will see some of its most forward-facing executives promoted up the corporate ladder. Shawn Layden, who will continue to front Sony Interactive Entertainment America and act as the Chairman of Worldwide Studios, will “concentrate his focus on providing platform-defining content” for the company. According to a press release, the firm’s “mission to create and develop the most attractive and powerful first-party titles has become more important than ever”.

Nintendo

  • Outlast 2 is set to launch March 27 for Switch.

  • Outlast: Bundle. of Terror got a surprise drop on the Switch eShop.

  • Nintendo opened up user reviews for Switch games on it’s site…..only to remove the feature a mere two days later. We’re guessing this has to do with a few bad eggs and their foul mouths, but we have no confirmation.

Nintendo.com recently offered a trial customer review feature to let users share feedback about Nintendo Switch games on our website. The response has been positive, and Nintendo appreciates the time and effort that reviewers put into their thoughtful commentary on the games. Nintendo has removed this feature as we evaluate the future of the ratings functionality on Nintendo.com. We have no estimate on when an update will be provided on the status of this initiative, but we appreciate the enthusiasm shown for the trial.

  • StreetPass relay stations will be going offline March 28th in Japan. The service, which has been online since 2013, has been primarily used for long range Street Pass sharing, granting connection with other 3DS users.

  • New wave of Super Mario Odyssey costumes have been discovered by data miners in the latest 1.2.0 update.

  • A new update is out for Splatoon 2 which includes changes to Salmon Run, the ranking system, weapons, and more.

  • According to a report on Wall Street Journal citing “people familiar with the matter”, Nintendo is prioritizing releasing new peripherals over hardware revisions with the Switch. It’s said some could utilize the system’s USB-C port which is intriguing.

Xbox

  • Following their re-release on PC, Turok and Turok 2 Seeds of Evil are both making their way to Xbox One and are now available for digital preorder.

  • In March, Xbox Game Pass members can also look forward to Rise of the Tomb Raider, Super Lucky’s Tale Resident Evil Revelation 2, Oxenfree, Sonic CD, The Final Station, and Euro Fishing coming to Xbox Game Pass March 1, in addition to over 100 more great games included in your membership.

  • Microsoft is doing some really cool things with Xbox One Backwards Compatibility, and this extends to Xbox One X as well. Four new Xbox 360 titles are now enhanced for Xbox One X, which include The Witcher 2, Forza Horizon, Fable Anniversary, and Crackdown. The software wizards at Xbox also released a new graphics setting for enhanced Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One X which allow 360 titles to run at a higher resolution with 9X the original pixel count—all without touching the game code. The full list of enhanced titles for Xbox One can be found below.

    • Assassin’s Creed
    • Crackdown
    • Fable Anniversary
    • Fallout 3
    • Forza Horizon
    • Gears of War 3
    • Halo 3
    • Mirror’s Edge
    • Oblivion
    • Skate 3
    • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Industry News

  • PAX organizer, ReedPOP, has acquired USgamer, Eurogamer and all other sites that are part of the Gamer Network.

  • Chrono Trigger received a surprise release on PC via Steam for $14.99. While this should be great news, players are vocally panning this as a lazy port of the mobile which many find inferior to the DS version

  • Amidst all the loot crate controversies, the ESRB announced they’re introducing an ‘in-game purchases’ label. Many people, myself included, find this lazy as a lot of games offer cosmetic dlc and a generic blanket label doesn’t seem like it’s really helping anyone

  • Cevat Yerli, the founder of Crytek, is stepping down from his role as chief executive and president of the company. According to a press release posted at the company’s website, brothers Avni and Faruk Yerli will carry on as joint CEOs.

  • Overwatch’s 27th hero is Brigitte Lindholm and she’s currently available in the PTR. Bridgette is the daughter of Torbjorn Lindholm and she is a support character.

  • Also the latest Overwatch update sees Sombra, Doomfist, and Mei all receive a little more punch.

  • 3D Realms (I honestly had no idea they were still around), best known for creating Duke Nukem 3D, just released a new shooter on Steam Early Access built on the 1995 Build Engine. The title is a fast-paced gory shooter called Ion Maiden and its doing Early Access a bit different than most; instead of releasing whole parts of the game then improving them, Ion Maiden is releasing an intro campaign that’s “a fully finalized and polished product”, then adding stages to the campaign as the year goes on.

  • If you were itching to invade other people’s games online or enjoy some co-op in Demon Souls, you’re time is up as Altus has shut down the servers.

  • This week, Sega released the Yakuza 6 demo—or it thought it did anyway! Players were surprised to discover the demo clocked in at around a whopping 40GB.
