Recap 7.29.16

PlayStation

  • No Man\’s Sky will not require a PlayStation Plus Membership to play \’multiplayer\’ online

  • Similar to the last couple major firmware updates for PS4, Sony is taking beta testers for its next major update. No new features have been announced at this time

  • While technically not PlayStation news any longer, ex VP of publisher and developer relations Adam Boyes is now CEO of Galaxy Studios, who helped work on games like Destiny and Bioshock: Infinite

Xbox

  • We Happy Few is now a available as part of Xbox’s Game Preview program. Tristan will have his thoughts on the PC version, keeping in mind it\’s a work in progress, in time

  • Microsoft announced the 500GB and 1TB Xbox One S consoles will be available starting August 23rd, priced at $299 and $349. There are two bundles available for pre-order right now, including Madden NFL 17, which includes a month subscription to EA’s Access and a Halo Collection that includes Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

  • Microsoft has updated its Xbox Live terms of service to reflect a new policy regarding gamertags. From this point forward you will lose your gamertag if you fail to sign in at least once within five years. This seems generous and is clearly set in place to curb people from squatting on names they have no intention of using

Nintendo

  • Nintendo\’s stock saw a sharp dive because investors are brainless idiots who don\’t do their research before snapping up shares of a company

  • Those candies in Miitomo now actually have some value to me. Prior to the new update the only use for candy was to reveal your friends answers to questions that were hidden from you . Soon, however, candy can be used to play a special Miitomo Drop stage in order to acquire new gear for your avatar

  • The Pokémon GO plus accessory has been delayed until September. Many people likely don\’t care and will have all but forgotten about Pokémon GO by then because the servers still won\’t work

Industry News

  • Bungie is releasing a 2.3.1 patch for Destiny on what it calls legacy consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) which ready it for the upcoming expansion Rise of Iron. Other than emergency patches no new content will be making its way to last gen players. Perhaps more importantly though, Bungie has stated that starting some time in August last gen and next gen characters will progress separately.

  • Legendary Digital Studios has partnered with Square Enix and dj2 to give the excellent award winning Life is Strange a live action adventure in a new digital series

  • Popular Twitch streamer Summit1G was trying to catch Pokémon until a viewer thought it would be funny to swat him by telling police “a man in the park has an AK-47” and “had planted remote mines and wanted to kill people and police”

  • Three Fields Entertainment creative director and bearer-of-good-news Alex Ward, \”Work has begun on a driving game.\” Three Fields Entertainment was founded by Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry, the same people who founded Criterion Games, the makers of the Burnout franchise.
