Weekly Retro: 5.7 – 5.11

PlayStation

  • God of War’s 1.20 patch has released and includes a feature I love in modern games which is photo mode! Too bad I beat the game and have no desire to return (for now).

Nintendo

  • Nintendo finally shed some more details on how Switch’s online service will work. The service will go live this September and will be needed to play games online. It will also (finally) give Switch owners a way of backing up their saves to the cloud as well as offering twenty NES games at launch. These games have been reworked to include online functionality, even for single player games. Players will need to be subscribed to the service in order to use the platform’s shitty voice chat but they will also receive exclusive discounts. As for price, a 12-month subscription costs $19.99 while one month will set you back $3.99, and three months $7.99. There’s also a family membership program, which allows a Nintendo Account member to join up with as many as seven other folks to access the Switch Online service for $34.99.

  • Capcom is bringing the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX to the west as Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on August 28 of this year.

  • Nintendo is releasing a small charging dock that offers charging pass-through so players can charge and play at the same time—what an idea! Expect to see it July 13 for $19.99.

  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze’s debut sales on Switch in the UK were 53.7% higher than Wii U, which is great because that game is phenomenal.

Xbox

  • According to EA, sales of Xbox One hovered around 30M at the end of 2017 while Sony recently crossed the 80M mark not too long ago. It’s worth pointing out that both companies have many other revenue streams, so even though Microsoft is significantly behind Sony in terms of consoles sales, we’re sure the Redmond company isn’t hurting either.

Industry News

  • If you’ve been holding out on Crash Bandicoot N. Sane trilogy for Xbox One, Switch, or PC then I have some good news—the game is launching early on June 29 rather than the original release date of July 10. While it’s not a big difference, it’s always nice when we get little surprises like this.

  • Have you ever wanted to stream your Steam games to your iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or Android tablet? Well as of May 21 that dream will be a reality with the Steam Link app.

  • After lagging behind here in the west for years, the Monster Hunter series may finally be taken more seriously by Capcom. This is thanks to the series being what they called a “flagship title” for the company, selling 8M copies since it’s release in January.

  • Fortnite’s next big limited event will feature Marvel villain Thanos from Infinity War. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new gameplay mode will still feature one hundred people vying for the number one spot, except there will also be an Infinity Gauntlet in play. Whoever finds the Gauntlet on the map will transform into Thanos.

  • Frontier Games announced on their official forum that they are discontinuing support of the title for macOS, which is a bummer to that part of the fanbase.

Word on the Street

  • A new rumor points to the possibility that SNK might be working on a new mini arcade console.
