Weekly Retro: 7.2 – 7.6

PlayStation

  • Sony is understandably getting dragged in the mud regarding it’s rejection of cross-play support. We get it from a business perspective—but the Fortnite fiasco is taking it too far for sure. Now Todd Howard of Bethesda told CNET in an interview that “You cannot do cross-play in 76. We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.”

Nintendo

  • According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furkukawa, the company is kicking around the idea of a 3DS successor. We’d imagine the price would have to top out at $199 or less to make it a cost effective alternative to the Switch priced at $299.

  • Team Cherry’s latest eShop hit, Hollow Knight, has moved 250k units within it’s first two weeks of release.

  • Nintendo’s stock may have dipped a bit as “analysts” aren’t seeing a strong software lineup, but according to GameStop the Switch’s sales doubled the week after after E3, indicating that consumers are eagerly awaiting great titles like Smash Bros and Pokémon.

  • According to a new report, not from Nintendo, Super Mario Run has brought in 65M in sales. A few other tidbits are
    – 77% came from iOS which had a six month lead
    – 35% on Android after releasing in the first quarter of this year
    – about 43% of total revenue comes from players in the US while Japan saw about 17% of sales

  • Dataminers have been chipping away at Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and it appears that the game is set to receive a very different approach to difficulty selection. According to the discovery, players may soon be able to adjust things such as enemy attack power and frequency, enemy HP, your own health restoration, and your chain attack damage multiplier to whatever you want.

  • Pokémon Quest launched on mobile a week ago, but the bitesize pocket monster adventure has already generated $3M in revenue after 3.5 million downloads, not including Switch. Some more details:
    – 56% income from iOS
    – 44% on Android
    – Japan accounted for 31% of total revenue so far

Xbox

  • In celebration of Banjo-Kazooie’s 20th anniversary, Rare is selling a referential ship customization item in Sea of Thieves for (a very fitting) 1,998 gold. The Bird & Bear Figurehead is available throughout July, and you’ll find it for sale at the Shipwright Shop on the outpost docks.

  • Xbox One’s big July update has release and your can read all about it here . Here are the highlights:
    – FastStart Enabled for Select Titles
    – Group Your Games and Apps
    – More Search Options
    – Mixer Share Controller Improvements
    – Full Screen Broadcasting on Mixer
    – Console broadcasting quality and stability improvements

  • If you own a physical copy of boring beat-em-up Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn on PS4, Xbox One or Switch, then you might find new content waiting for you when you next decide to play.
