Weekly Retro: 10/1 – 10/5

PlayStation

  • Sony first party studio Media Molecule has been plugging away on Dreams since PS4’s launch and other than a few gameplay clips, we don’t know much about it. We did learn this week, however, that the title will support PSVR on day one via a patch which seems pretty fitting to me.

Nintendo

  • If you’ve been holding out to play Stardew Valley’s multiplayer on Switch we have good news, developer ConcernedApe announced via Twitter that the patch has entered QA (quality assurance) testing at Nintendo. If all goes well, we should see the update go live in the very near future.

  • Fire Emblem Heroes is releasing a separate Lite version that will feature simplified graphics, animation, and sound, with the overall compression making the game an impressive 75% smaller in capacity than its full-size counterpart. This is Ideal for those lacking memory on their phones. Fire Emblem Heroes is also receiving new abysmal difficulty maps, new weapons, along with the ability to edit names on marks.

  • Sensor Tower revealed the new Nintendo-published mobile game Dragalia Lost has grossed an estimated $3.5M over its first five days of release based on its limited launch in the US, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau across more than 800K installations between the iOS and Android.

  • The NES Online service for Switch will he updated October 10 with Super Dodge Ball, NES Open Tournament Golf, and Solomon’s Key. I still want World Cup Soccer and California Games. Oh, and maybe Gyromite.

  • If you live in France and we’re hoping to grab a Switch off of Amazon soon I have some bad news—It appears Nintendo has refused future stock shipments to Amazon France following a number of disagreements over product pricing, meaning customers must now buy their Switch consoles from third-party sellers or shop elsewhere.

  • Birdo is now available in Mario Tennis Aces to those who play an online tournament which now requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership (you can grab a free seven day trial). For those who don’t have an online membership, you’ll be able to get Birdo free on November 1.

Xbox

  • During this year’s Minecon, Mojang announced a new role-playing game set in the Minecraft universe called Minecraft: Dungeons due out next year on Windows PC (no word yet on other platforms). The game’s style is an overhead-view dungeon crawler, filled with monsters and familiar figures from the Minecraft world. Players can take on the world alone, or as part of a four person group.

Industry News

  • We got our first glimpse at the new LEGO set based on the wildly popular Overwatch franchise, starting with the also wildly popular Tracer. We also know each character will be getting their own LEGO set, but we have no details other than that.

  • The author behind the original book series The Witcher, is reportedly seeking $16 M in royalties from CD Projekt Red. The Polish developer paid Sapkowski a full lump sum, at his request, back in the early 2000s so the studio could create The Witcher game. The thing is, said that game spawned the series that we now know. However, Sapkowski asked for a bulk sum of money rather than a percentage of the profits, because, in his own words, he didn’t believe in CD Projekt Red’s success.

  • XCOM 2 is getting some new DLC called The Tactical Legacy Pack, that includes story missions, remastered maps, and is set to bridge the gap between the first XCOM and XCOM 2. The new content will drop on October 9 and will be free for a couple months. On top of this

  • Capcom revealed the company has greenlit a live-action Mega Man film written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, with 20th Century Fox handling distribution. Chernin Entertainment, responsible for the Planet of the Apes series, will be in charge of producing alongside with Masi Oka.

  • Capcom also announced a live-action film based on the Monster Hunter series will be making its way to the big screen by Constantin Film with Paul W.S. Anderson directing. There is no set release date as it sounds like movie is in early production.

  • If vanilla Overcooked 2 wasn’t enough for you or the free New Game+ DLC which adds a fourth star to each level, the first major DLC is Surf ‘n’ Turf is out now and for $5.99. It comes with 12 new story levels, three new chefs, more recipes (BBQ skewers and smoothies), as well as the ability to “blast your plates clean” with a water pistol. The bellows also has a risk-reward mechanic involved where you can burn your BBQ if you’re overzealous

  • In last week’s LAN Party episode we discussed the fact that Red Dead Redemption 2 will require over 100GB of space according to the box for the PS4 bundle. Now it has been revealed that CoD Black Ops 4 will also require a minimum of 100GB to install. This makes one thing clear—the next generation of consoles simply can’t ship with a paltry 500GB hard drives or even 1TB.

  • Google’s long-rumored Yeti streaming service is now official, as the company announced Project Stream this week, a service that will allow users to stream games to Chrome. The first game supported will be Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which launches on Friday.

  • Randy Pitchford, Gearbox Software co-founder and chief executive, and his wife are among the victims of a Texas man whom authorities say is responsible for millions of dollars in theft and unauthorized purchases. The man’s name is John Wright Martin who was Pitchford’s personal assistant and is said to have smuggled

Word on the Street

  • If the footage leaked earlier this week is leaked real, Warner Bros.’ Avalanche Software — the studio behind licensed games such as Toy Story and the Disney Infinity series — are working on an “open-world action RPG” set in the world of Harry Potter. The alleged leaked footage shows the usual cast of wizards, wands, trolls, and goblins as well as peeks at familiar locations like Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. As of writing we don’t have confirmation, which isn’t surprising.

  • I’m putting this under rumors even though I confirmed it on PlayStation’s official site, but it looks like in November players will he treated to Bulletstorm: Extended Clip Edition aling with Yakuza: Kiwami. It’s all but certain there will be more games as well, but the image only shows those two because it’s a smaller advert.

  • According to the WSJ Japan and then elaborated on by the American WSJ, it appears Nintendo is gearing up to release a new Switch SKU by Summer or late 2019 in an attempt to boost sales momentum which has slowed since the console’s initial release. It is said the hardware and software features are still in the works, but a brighter, thinner, and more energy efficient display will likely make the cut.

  • As PlayStation users across the world wonder whether they’ll ever get to change their names from (or to) xxPoopL0rdxx, the option now seems closer than ever with developers of multiplayer games telling Kotaku they’ve been fixing bugs, tweaking settings, and ensuring that their games are compatible with Sony’s upcoming plans.
