Weekly Retro: 10/15 – 10/19

PlayStation

  • According to Playstation’s UK Twitter account, the company has fixed the Messages bug that would cause consoles to soft brick. The issue stemmed from a certain string of characters that, when displayed, would cause the console to lock up, requiring a system restore to fix. We’ve seen this sort of thing before on iOS, but this is the first for a home console from what we remember.

  • PlayStation Vue, Sony’s sneakily growing video service, has earned the distinct honor of being the first streaming TV provider to be integrated into Apple’s TV app. Subscribers will now be able to watch live and on-demand content through the TV app on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, instead of only in the PS Vue app.

Nintendo

  • PokĂ©mon Go player will soon start seeing pocket monsters from the Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum eras. Like other PokĂ©mon, they will appear in the wild, during raids, and hatching from eggs.

  • GameFreak food Eurogamer in a recent interview that an open world PokĂ©mon game is something that could still happen. Director Junichi Madura said the following:

Well you know in general, I always want to be kind of facing new challenges and trying to you know, do new things with PokĂ©mon. You know it’s a different matter whether players will actually enjoy that kind of playstyle, but really you know, things like setting up an AI so that you know real world PokĂ©mon appear, or different ways to appreciate the game, I’m always kind of thinking how to approach the PokĂ©mon series from a different aspect so, in that sense, it’s still on the cards

  • Nintendo has revealed a brand new Diablo III-themed limited edition Switch console set to be available when the game releases November 2. The bundle includes a console and dock featuring Diablo III artwork, a download code for Diablo III: Eternal Collection, and a themed carrying case. Sitting alongside the also-upcoming PokĂ©mon Let’s Go and Super Smash Bros. Switch consoles, this marks the first time that a third-party title has received its own custom Switch system.

  • Some excited players who purchased physical copies of the starter pack for Starlink on Switch are finding the game to be unplayable—but not because of bugs or any in-game glitches — instead, Best Buy has been reportedly shipping customers empty packages without the game inside. Some people have had luck getting replacements in store, but as of writing, the bundle is sold out online. Those affected are told to contact Best Buy, although Ubisoft has gone on record saying players can contact them as well.

  • NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is now available on the Switch. Saber Interactive said it was hoping to bounce back from the original NBA Playgrounds game which suffered from a mess of a launch to say the least. To help recover from this troubled period, the original game is now no longer able to be purchased from online digital stores including Nintendo’s eShop on the Switch. There was no mention this would happen prior to the release of the sequel. This decision seems like an easy way for 2K to redirect any potential buyers of the first game to the more expensive sequel – containing an updated roster, microtransactions and more. Users who have already bought the first game on the Switch will still be able to download the title.

Xbox

  • Four new Xbox 360 titles will be available enhanced for Xbox One X: the historic collection of Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, Portal: Still Alive, Left 4 Dead, and Left 4 Dead 2.

Industry News

  • Speaking on a Fall Festival broadcast, Dragon Quest producer Yu Miyake stated that he still intends on creating a western, offline version of Dragon Quest X, a title which released in Japan in 2012 as the first MMO in the series. In regards to making it single player, Miyake said:

Dragon Quest X has plenty of rich stories, and I want to make something to share it with others, including those overseas.

  • No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games has been sending out surveys to random players asking what they’d like to see next post….err….NEXT. Notably one of the options (and one of the most requested features after the addition of multiplayer) is for VR support. Who knows, maybe we’ll see it. That could be neat.

  • We know that Red Dead Redemption 2’s install size is pretty huge, but what does that mean for people who buy the game physically? Discs these days usually just load the game onto the hard drive, but at about 100GB, a subtle Blu-ray Disc won’t be enough. According to an image among the rounds of the Japanese box art, the title will ship with two discs—both of which will be installed to your systems hard drive and one of which will need to be in the system to play.

  • Earlier this week, an interview with Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser sent shockwaves through the industry, as he appeared to suggest that the studio had been working 100 hour weeks in order to get Red Dead Redemption 2 out of the door. This, he later clarified, was not entirely the case: only the senior writing team (including himself) worked such an intense schedule for about three weeks. In an unprecedented move, the firm has now allowed staff to comment publicly on social media about the issue. Vivianne Langdon, a tools programmer at Rockstar San Diego, was one of the first to rally around the organization – but she’s since been followed by a slew of other staff members, all defending the culture at the embattled label.

  • Discord officially launched the beta of its new store, which is open to all users and has games from a variety of publishers. According to the company, the store is set to focus on providing users less with an endless set of games to choose from and more with a curated library of selections like Celeste, Frostpunk, Into the Breach and Dead Cells

  • The Stanley Parable is a game that releases on October 17, 2013 and could be completed in around 30 minutes or less. However, players could not earn one achievement titled “Go Outside” because it requires the player to not touch the game for five years. This week marks the first time anyone would be able to unlock it.
