Weekly Retro: 10/29 – 11/2

PlayStation

  • Sony released the full list of games coming to the PlayStation Classic, and overall, they’re kind of meh.
    • Battle Arena Toshinden
    • Cool Boarders 2
    • Destruction Derby
    • Final Fantasy VII
    • Grand Theft Auto
    • Intelligent Qube
    • Jumping Flash
    • Metal Gear Solid
    • Mr Driller
    • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
    • Rayman
    • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
    • Revelations: Persona
    • Ridge Racer Type 4
    • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
    • Syphon Filter
    • Tekken 3
    • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
    • Twisted Metal
    • Wild Arms
Gamers who grew up with the console will instantly spot some glaring omissions such as the original GTA, Crash Bandicoot, Cool Boarders 2, Sypro the Dragon, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and more. You can kiss these goodbye thanks to IP licensing (Crash and Spyro changing hands), music licensing, and HD remakes. If you’re still interested in the micro PlayStation, you can get yours December 3 for a cool $100.
  • PlayStation Plus games for November have been revealed and include:
Playstation 4: Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, Yakuza Kiwami
Playstation 3: Jack Box Party Pack 2
PlayStation Vita: Burly Men At Sea, Roundabout for PlayStation Vita (both Cross Buy-compatible with PS4)

Nintendo

  • Nintendo recently released a video to celebrate over 1,000 games on the console since launch, which has been under two years. Many would argue, myself included, whether that’s good or not as there tends to be a lot of shovel ware and sloppy mobile ports.

  • ARK: Survival Evolved has a new trailer and is set to stomp on Switch November 30 for $49.99.

  • Capcom announced Switch will be getting Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, and Resident Evil 4 some time in 2019.

  • Nintendo announced the Switch has sold nearly 23M consoles to date in under two years of release while SNES and NES Classic sales are over 10M and amiibo (remember those?) are at over 50M.

  • There was yet another Nintendo Direct dedicated to Smash Bros Ultimate. I don’t know all the details and trust Tristan will fill us in during the podcast, but here are the big takeaways:
    – there will be a roster of 74 fighters to start
    – spirits look to significantly change how the game will be played
    – the online game modes are getting overhauled, including the addition of a mobile app
    – paid DLC will add new fighters and stages post launch

Xbox

  • The list of titles for this November’s Games with Gold have been revealed
    – Battlefield 2 (all Nov)
    – Race the Sun (Nov 16 – Dec 17)
    – Assassin’s Creed (until Nov 15)
    – Dante’s Inferno (until Nov 30)

  • Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive has been rated by the ESRB for PC which coincides with Microsoft’s plans to bring more Xbox games, especially exclusives, over to Windows 10.

Industry News

  • Hello Games released an update to No Mans Sky titled Abyss. The new content update adds several hours of narrative and focuses on underworld exploration and base building. I’m actually kind of intrigued, although Unknown Worlds also recently announced a massive content update for Subnautica

  • Walmart is getting into the gaming PC business as the retailer has announced an exclusive line of three laptops and three desktop towers under the name Overpowered. Oh, and the specs are actually pretty good. The machines, available only from Walmart, have been built in partnership with Esports Arena. Firstly, the laptops. Walmart’s entry-level machine is the “OP Gaming Laptop 15” which comes with a 15.6-inch display with a 144Hz refresh rate, a Core i5-8300H processor, 8GB of RAM and a GeForce GTZ 1050 GPU. Storage-wise, it offers up a 128GB SSD with a 1TB HDD. Not bad for $999. Next up is a “Plus” version, which bumps the specs up to a Core i7-8750H processor with 16MB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU and a 256GB SSD paired with a 1TB HDD. This one’s one sale for $1,399. Then there’s a 17-inch version with the same CPU and GPU, but with an eye-watering 32GB of RAM and 2TB HDD alongside the 256 SSD, hence its heftier price tag of $1,699. All of the laptops come with a mechanical keyboard with RGB lighting, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port, and a USB 2.0 port.

  • Rockstar announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 had the “biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment” with $725M sold in three days. This has only been beaten by another Rockstar game, Grand Theft Auto V.

Word on the Street

  • Coming from seemingly nowhere, multiple retailers have listings for a Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy bundle pack. The compilation is listed for PS4 and Xbox One with a November 13 release date priced at $59.99. It contains all six games in one package, though curiously Spyro still makes mention of requiring a content download.

  • Nintendo has updated their trademarks for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Mario vs Donkey Kong. While this sort of thing is nothing new, the newest category covers is—‘program for smartphone’. We know a Zelda game is making it’s way to mobile, and looking how both Spirt Tracks and Mario vs Donkey Kong control, it’s not crazy to think they’d be making the jump to mobile.
