Weekly Retro: 1/21 – 1/25

Nintendo

  • Mario Kart 8 is now reportedly the second best-selling racing game of all time across the US behind the absurdly popular Mario Kart Wii.

  • In disappointing, but not entirely unexpected news, Final Fantasy fans planning to grab the physical edition of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster for Nintendo Switch will have to download X-2. Perhaps more frustrating is the fact that the Japanese and Southeast Asian versions have managed to fit both titles on a single game card.

Industry News

  • The SEGA Ages re-releases have been pretty great so far, but the devs may take the retro releases one step further by “localizing titles which have never been translated if they can draw a reaction”. That’d be pretty great!

  • Are you ready for some competitive virtual farming? I hope so, because Giants Software announced it will a run an esports league for its weirdly popular Farming Simulator series. The first season of Farming Simulator League will consist of 10 tournaments that will take place across Europe. Competitors will go head to head with a chance to win up to $280,000 in prize money put up by the developer.

  • Just this month, Rocket League joined hot new gaming trend of “everyone-should-be-able-to-play-together-no-matter-their-platform-of-choice”, or you know, cross-platform play as everyone else calls it. To make managing this type of play easier, the game will be receiving a cross-platform friends list and a party system next month.

  • Amazingly, despite all of the recent bullshit and probable legal action, rapper Soulja Boy is back yet again, this time claiming he’s working on another new console which will even be able to play Fortnite. When asked, Epic Games gave a hard “no” claiming that their games don’t run on rooted Android devices.

  • The recent demo for the Resident Evil 2 remake has surpassed 2M player downloads.

  • If you didn’t remember that the developers of the Pokémon series, Game Freak, put out a 2D platform-puzzle game called Giga Wrecker on Steam, don’t feel bad. I didn’t either. Yeah, me neither. If you missed out on this title previously, you’ll soon be able to play on PS4, Xbox One, or Switch when Giga Wrecker Alt releases. No date has been given at the time of writing.

  • A lawsuit filed in a Texas civil court alleges that Randy Pitchford, co-founder and CEO of Gearbox Software, improperly siphoned $12M from Gearbox for his own personal gain at a time when the company was said to be denying raises company-wide.

  • CD Projekt RED have just lost their creative director who was working on the studio’s upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077 to Blizzard. Sebastian’s other contributions at the company include The Witcher 2 and 3.

  • If you enjoy a round or two of Fortnite on your Nintendo Switch, you might have noticed a slump in your own performance in recent times. This actually may not have anything to do with your skill, because according to an in-game test Digital Foundry recently ran in each version of the game, there’s a glitch where platforms running the title at a silky-smooth 60 fps currently have an advantage over platforms running the game at 30 fps. Digital Foundry investigated gunfire rates on 60 fps versions of the game and noticed how more damage could be dealt per second than in the 30 fps versions. To be exact, it’s a 5.2% increase in the rate of gunfire when playing on a platform running the 60 fps version of Fornite.

  • What’s the best thing to do when your game gets leaked ahead of its official release date? Why, it’s to tell everyone that for future games, you might scrap the idea of a worldwide launch entirely.
