Industry News

  • Man on man, Bethesda has been in the news of late for all the wrong reasons. Initially, we reported last week that those who previously purchased the $200 collection were furious to find a cheap nylon bag in place of the canvas bag that was advertised and promised. Bethesda tried to remedy this by giving this gamers $5 in in-game currency. Now this week the company said they’ll make good on their initial promise (while definitely avoiding a class action lawsuit) by sending out canvas bags to those who put Rocha’s Ed the collectors edition. The problem? Those who placed tickets on Bethesda’s support site were also granted access to opening and closing tickets as well as being able to see the personal information like emails, phone numbers, and addresses for other customers. WHOOPS!

  • Tony Hawk is releasing a new Tony Hawk Pro Skater game! Well, sort of. I mean, Tony Hawk is releasing a new game on iOS next week called Tony Hawk’s Skate Jam as a free-to-play title which is said to feature a classic career mode, global tournaments, and more.

  • Epic’s Tim Sweeney revealed this week that the team is no longer actively working on their revival of Unreal Tournament. This is no doubt due to the wild success of Fortnite.

  • Epic Games also officially unveiled Fortnite Creative, a sandbox mode allowing players to build their own maps and match types. Perhaps more interesting is that you’ll be able to craft these levels using an endless supply of materials, either alone or with friends.

  • Blizzard is running their in-game Winter Wonderland event from December 11 to January 2 with a decked-out makeover for the Blizzard World map along with more seasonal character skins and returning cosmetics you might’ve missed.

  • ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove!, the upcoming fourth entry of the beloved franchise from series co-creator Greg Johnson’s HumaNature Studios, will funk up Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC March 1st.

  • Matt Makes Games has unveiled a new feature for Celeste which is currently in beta on Itch and Steam. The upcoming version 1.2.5.0 brings a new “Variants Mode” that can be unlocked after completing all C-Sides, which creator Matt Thorson describes as “kind of like anti-Assist Mode: a collection of options to make the game harder or weirder.”

  • Staring April 1 of next year, Ubisoft Club Points will now have an expiration date of two hears from the date of accumulation.

  • Payday publisher Starbreeze is seemingly struggling as of late as the Swedish game developer has filed for reconstruction due to a shortage of liquid assets—capital that can be near-immediately turned into cash. As part of the reconstruction process, Starbreeze has ousted CEO Bo Andersson. It’s been said this is largely due to the high licensing fee to make The Walking Dead game which has suffered from abysmal sales.

  • According to people who have played Red Dead Redemption 2 Online, the in-game economy prices are pretty ridiculous with most items requiring an insane amount of hours worth of grinding to obtain. Rockstar said they’re listening to feedback and are going to balance and adjust prices accordingly.

  • On Monday, Valve’s Sam Lantinga announced that the Steam Link app is now available in beta form on the Raspberry Pi 3 and 3 B+ To those running the “Stretch” version of Pi’s OS (which has been default anyway since August 2017). After running a few lines of code, you’ll have a fully functional DIY Steam Link box for $35 or less.

Word on the Street

  • A Swedish retailer has listed a Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch.

  • German retailer MediaMarkt recently listed Assassin’s Creed Compilation for Switch before it was quickly removed, but Nintendo Everything caught a screenshot of the errant entry.
