Weekly Retro: 1/7 – 1/11

PlayStation

  • PS4 exclusive Spiderman is soaring high to the tune of 9M copies sold worldwide in a little over 90 days after release.

  • Sony is creeping to 100M consoles sold with 91.6M moved to date, 5.6M of which were sold between November 19 and December 31.

  • I’ve been a fan of PSVR since it’s launch, but it’s always struggled with locomotion when using two Move controllers. Now the headset is getting its first licensed controller called 3DRudder that puts full motion control at your feet. Unfortunately, the controller would require support to be patched in for games and—if that isn’t bad enough—the controller costs almost as much as the VR set itself at around $140.

Nintendo

  • Nintendo detailed the games coming to Switch Online this month. They are:
    * Blaster Master
    * Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

  • It’s been revealed that Yoshi’s Craft World will debut on March 29 for Switch. This is definitely a title some of us at Pixelrater are into.

  • Long time Warframe players have until Tuesday January 5 to migrate their PC profiles over to Switch before the ability is lost forever.

  • Marketing analysis firm Sensor Tower have come up with some numbers regarding Nintendo’s mobile games division for2018
    * made a total of $348M in 2018
    * $117M was made in the fourth quarter alone, resulting in a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2017
    * surge is thanks to the release of Dragalia Lost in September, which made around $58.4M with launch in limited
    * Fire Emblem Heroes is still Nintendo’s top selling mobile title accounting for 66% of the Japanese company’s mobile revenue

  • The Humble Store has now joined the list of retailers who sell Nintendo games, specifically digital 3DS and Switch games.

  • Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age are launching on Switch this April.

  • Adding to the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movie hype, a new set of trading cards based on the spin-off series has been confirmed for release in Japan. The collection is a subset of the main TCG series, consisting of 24 cards in total plus at least one mystery design. They will arrive in stores April 26.

  • Capcom announced Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will light things up April 23 on Switch.

Xbox

  • Xbox has added some Xbox Game Pass specific quests. Members can earn up to 2100 Microsoft Rewards points by playing any game from the Xbox Game Pass catalog. Players can rack up points they can spend towards their membership or DLC for games.

Industry News

  • In a major blow to Steam, Ubisoft announced The Division 2 will release on the Epic Game Store rather than Valve’s long running platform when it launches May 25. This is the latest in a series of high-profile announcements that are pro Epic Game Store.

  • This week Subnautica developer, Unknown Worlds, announced that Subnautica’s upcoming standalone expansion, Below Zero, will release on Steam and the Epic store in the beginning of February. First on PC, then on. consoles later.

  • CES 2019 has been in full swing this week and there was a particular reveal that will make light gun retro gamers happy. Hyperkin announced a HDTV compatible light gun that will work with games like Duck Hunt on any HDTV.

  • Coming seemingly out of nowhere, yet not really all that surprising, Activision and Bungie have parted ways after an eight year partnership with Destiny. That’s a full two years earlier than originally planned, no doubt due to Activision’s disappointment with Destiny 2 sales. Even still, Destiny is a valuable IP and one that Bungie gets to fortunately keep. This means the developer retains all the rights to the franchise and said they will be publishing future titles in the Destiny franchise. Both companies released the joint statement below.

    Today, we’re announcing plans for Bungie to assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise. Going forward, Bungie will own and develop the franchise, and Activision will increase its focus on owned IP and other projects. Activision and Bungie are committed to a seamless transition for the Destiny franchise and will continue to work closely together during the transition on behalf of the community of Destiny players around the world.

  • The Bravely Default Twitter account is still kicking following last year’s tease in August that hinted at upcoming game in the series. Now, the account has officially confirmed a new game is indeed in development, although no specific mention was made regarding platforms or even if the new title is in fact a Bravely Default entry. But let’s be honest, why would you tweet that kind of news from the game’s account if you’re not making a new game in the series?

  • Alien Isolation was a big hit when it came out in 2014, so news of a sequel might come as welcome news to fans. Perhaps less welcome, however, might be the fact that said sequel is a mobile game.

    It’s hard to get spooped on a four inch screen.

    Earlier this week, developer Fox announced Alien Blackout, a survival horror game that, just like Isolation, stars Amanda Ripley. Also unlike Isolation, which was developed by the British studio Creative Assembly, Alien Blackout will be published by D3 Go, previously responsible for Marvel Puzzle Quest and Adventure Gnome.
