Weekly Retro:4/8 – 4/12

PlayStation

  • You can finally change your PSN ID, although we don’t suggest you do so right away, because there are quite a few caveats. Not all games are compatible and some that Sony tested are ‘critically broken’ to the point that users would lose leaderboard scores and even save date. That’s insane and goes to show how poorly PSN ID implementation was from the start. Fortunately, if you find an issue with a game you can always revert back to your old ID for free by contacting PlayStation since your old ID will always belong to you. The first name change is free with a standard $10 fee after that with no limit. Also new is that the platform will no longer ban you if your ID violates their terms, instead Sony will issue you a temporary ID until you change it to a suitable one.

  • Sucker Punch is looking for a narrative writer to help flesh out Ghost of Tsushima’s open world, and it’s got some fans in a frenzy. The Seattle-based studio is after a scribe who can write “high quality dialogue under tight deadlines for a diverse cast of characters who live in the world of 13th century Japan”……so. apparently this means that the title is still a long way away. So much for that 2019 release date.

Xbox

  • Xbox Games Pass is getting some pretty stellar titles this month:
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Prey
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Life is Strange 2 Episode 2 (finally)
  • The Golf Club 2

  • Microsoft has started a Spring Summer Sale for Xbox with almost 500 deals on games and other content. The sale starts now through April 22. Check it out here.

Industry News

  • Bluepoint Games, the talented team who brought us the remake of Shadow of the Colossus for PS4, are discussing their latest title. It’s a new IP and one they claim is a “re-envisioning” of SoTC.

For Shadow of the Colossus we don’t call it a remaster, we coin it a remake due to the complexity of the project. And moving forward to our next project, we call it a re-envisioning given that it goes well beyond what we thought was possible on Shadow of the Colossus.

  • Last week we reported that Ubisoft had stopped making toys for Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Now, the company has confirmed the halt in production is permanent. The development team shared the following:

Despite the immense and continuous support from our players, the sales for Starlink: Battle for Atlas fell below expectations. Consequently, we recently made the decision to not release any additional physical toys for the Spring update and in the future. We are currently hard at work on our biggest update to the game so far and are pleased to tell all of you that there will be new digital ships, pilots and weapons to collect. Additionally, there will be a ton of free content to expand your games such as additional missions, challenges and new activities to engage in throughout Atlas, including content that was inspired by community suggestions, such as Outlaw Racing.

  • Did you know that DOOM is a very hard game to speedrun? ‘But why?’ you ask? It’s because at the end of every level, the in-game timer always rounds your completion time down by a full second—and we all know speedruns are often bested by the milliseconds someone else was able to shave off. To make matters worse, the specific level that has gone unbeaten since September of 1998 also has random enemy encounters, meaning no two tries are going to be quite the same. Congrats to 4shockblast for holding the current new record.

  • Last week Bethesda announced a new item would be coming to the game soon: repair kits. Rather than waste resources repairing weapons and armor, players will be able to use these kits instead. There’s a hitch. Players will only be able to buy them through Fallout 76’s microtransaction store.

Repair Kits are new utility items that will help you spend more time looting and shooting, and less time toiling away at a workbench fixing your gear. We’ve received lots of requests for Repair Kits, and we’re excited to add them in the weeks following Patch 8.
Gear deteriorates over time in Fallout 76, and the new repair kits will act as consumables that take busted equipment and restore it to 100% of its operating capacity. They’ll also only be available to purchase through the Atom Shop, an area separate from the main game where players can spend real money to buy Atoms to buy stuff like clothing and furniture to customize their characters and campsites. Players can also earn a small amount of Atoms by completing daily and weekly challenges.

  • The first trailer for the Ni No Kuni movie has dropped.

  • Developer Massive Entertainment revealed that The Division 2 will soon be getting a public test server on PC which can only help rollouts of new updates and balancing adjustments for all platforms.

  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice could very well become From Software’s most bankable release to date after clearing 2M copies in its first ten days of release. PRAISE THE SUN!

  • In a since-deleted blog post on Square Enix’s website, it has been confirmed that Octopath Traveler will be making its way to PC via Steam on June 7 of this year.
