    • Tales of Zestiria
  • Speaking of online subscription services on PS4, EA announced EA Access will arrive this summer on Sony’s platform.

  • Sony wrapped up their latest stab at a Nintendo Direct—State of Play. Here’s what was announced:

    • Iceborne, an expansion for Monster Hunter World. It releases 9/6/19
    • A new multiplayer dungeon crawler called Riverbond which features playable characters from indie games: Bastion, Shovel Knight, Enter the Dungeon, and more. The title arrives later this summer and reminds me a lot of 3D Dot Game Heroes.
    • Sony Interactive Entertainment shows a CG trailer reveal for Predator Hunting Grounds which is set to release in 2020 and is an online asymmetrical shooter that pits fireteams against Predator.
    • MediEvil is getting a remake that will fittingly be available October 25, 2019, right before Halloween.

    • A limited edition PS4 in steel gray called PS4 Days of Play was revealed.
    • A trailer showed more from Final Fantasy VII Remake with more to come in June (likely E3).

Nintendo

  • Nintendo has added three new games to the NES Online app
    • Donkey Kong Jr.
    • Clu Clu Land
    • VS. Excitebike
  • Nintendo revealed their plans for E3 2019 including an expected Nintendo Direct that will be held on June 11 at 12pm EST 9am PST that is said to “focus entirely on new software and will offer a look at games schedule d to launch in 2019”. That means it may well be jam-packed with content as Nintendo’s 2019 lineup is a deceptively busy one with the following titles:
    • Super Mario Maker 2
    • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
    • Astral Chain
    • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
    • Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition
    • Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch
    • Daemon X Machina
    • Luigi’s Mansion 3
    • Pokémon Sword and Shield
    • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

Nintendo will also host its Treehouse Live, er, livestream which we’ve also come to adore and expect.

  • Mario Kart Wii sold five times as many copies as Mario Kart 8 over the last financial year. Poor poor Wii U. Underrated because it was so misunderstood.

  • Take this with a massive grain of salt, but EB Canada has listed Biomutant as coming to Switch. After I had some hands-on time with a pre-alpha build at PAX, I just don’t see it. But hey, the system has defied game engines up to this point, so who knows.

  • Three months ago Devil May Cry boss, Hideaki Itsuno, teased that if Smash fans wanted to see Dante make an appearance in the series, his franchise would have to hit Switch first. And wouldn’t you know it, but the original Devil May Cry has been announced for Switch later this summer.

Xbox

  • Microsoft teased Minecraft AR with a promise that more details would be shared on May 17 which happens to be the title’s 10th anniversary.

Industry News

  • A massive new expansion is coming to The Elder Scrolls Online on June 4 called Elsweyr. To help hype the upcoming release, Bethesda decided to create a pen-and-paper adventure set in the Elder Scrolls universe. The problem? Well it appears the adventure borrows heavily from a popular DND campaign called The Black Road. Once Bethesda found out about the accusations, they immediately pulled the campaign and are “investigating the source”.

  • After trying for months to gain approval and monetize PUBG in China, publisher Tencent has decided to pull the game and instead release something else entirely that looks very similar to the intended release titled Game For Peace.

  • When the Twitter account for Cyberpunk 2077 posts anything, it whips fans into a frenzy. This week the account simply posted “Soon, my friend, soon!” which led many to believe a release date for the title was set for this year (lol), when in actuality the meaning was a lot more boring. The tweet was meant to coincide with CD Projekt Red’s opening of a new merch store and to promote the fact that merchandise was available for a game no one has played yet.

  • Capcom had a healthy report for this year’s financials with the publisher boasting six consecutive years of growth with income up by 13% at the end of the fiscal year. Capcom called out Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 2 as success while Mega Man 11 continues to perform well. But it’s Monster Hunter World that really stands out with over 12 million sales, making it the company’s best selling game of all time.

  • This will surprise no one, but EA has stated that Anthem sales have failed to meet the company’s expectations but that they are “doubling down on the product”. I really want Anthem to be a success, but after beating it within week one of release and writing my impressions, there still isn’t content to keep me coming back months later. I’m expected to just grind one of the three Strongholds over and over again. Here’s to hoping something can be done to salvage this IP.

  • The Tales series has surpassed 20M worldwide sales. As someone who only recently got into to franchise with the release of Tales of Vesperia for Switch, I’m happy to see the team reach such a milestone.

  • As far as heavy hitting battle Royale games go, both PUBG and Fortnite are on millions of mobile devices. That leaves newcomer Apex Legends out, but that may not be the case for long as EA revealed they’re in ‘advanced negotiations’ to bring the title to mobile platforms.

  • There’s not denying Platinum Games has had some stumbles as of late, but when the developer makes a hit, it’s usually pretty good. The problem is that the studio never owns the IP for the overwhelming majority of the games they create which means they have to move heaven and earth for a sequel to get made. The studio revealed they’re going to start self-publishing titles moving forward so they can decide when sequels get made. The studio already has the wheels in motion with two unannounced games being worked on, both of which they’ll own 100%.

  • If you’re one of five people still playing Fallout 76 then soon you’ll have four other people to sell your wares to. In the most recent update (Patch 9) players can now set up official vending machines in their CAMPs, which work just like any NPC vendor. While player trading has always been in the game since launch, it used to work via a clumsy UI that requires both players to fiddle with prices and offers. This new vending system allows for a much more organic way to trade and get new gear.

  • Ubisoft announced Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, a sequel to Wildlands. You can check out the reveal trailer here
