Weekly Retro: 4.30.18 – 5.4.18

PlayStation

  • PlayStation Now, Sony’s online game streaming service, has beefed up it’s catalogue by adding PS2 games to the mix. All the games listed below are the PS4 versions of the PS2 games, meaning they benefit from being in 1080p with trophy and screenshot/video capture support.
Available on PC and PS4 Now
    • Ape Escape 2
    • Dark Cloud 2
    • Hot Shots Tennis
    • Limbo
    • Metal Slug 3
    • Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics
    • Sine Mora EX
    • Siren
    • The Last Blade 2

  • PS4 exclusive God of War has seen critical praise where it currently holds a 94 on Metacritic with critics and a 92 with fans. Well, recent sales data helps back that up with the God father’s new outing selling 3.1M units worldwide within it’s first three days of release.

Nintendo

  • Nintendo’s Miitomo app is closing down May 9, but you’ll still be able to create and/or edit your Mii so long as you sync yours with a Nintendo Account before Miitomo’s closure. Nintendo announced they’re creating a web-based editor so you can edit your little Mii.

  • Gamevice is looking to block the sales of Switch here in the US. The company is claiming the devices infringes on it’s patent for the Switch’s design of two controllers that “snap on” to an electronic device “such as a smartphone or tablet”.

  • Jon Verrall, writer and cinematic designer for Retro Studios, has announced he will be leaving the company. Verrall has worked with the developer for nearly two years, and has presumably been working on Retro Studios’ as of yet unannounced upcoming project. The developer’s most recent game was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, originally released in 2014.

  • The Fall (not it’s sequel) is heading to Switch May 10 via the eShop for $9.99 but fans who buy it within it’s first two weeks of release can save 30%.

  • Mojang and 4J Studios are just about done with Minecraft on Wii U as well as other older platforms. The console will be getting the Update Aquatic, but after that, there won’t be much of a focus with keeping it up to date with newer versions of the game. As for Switch, Update Aquatic will be featured in the new Bedrock Engine-based version. However, there’s still no word on when exactly Bedrock will be offered on the console.

Xbox

  • A slew of new cosmetics for boats and weapons have been added to Sea of Thieves as well as a limited edition “Eye of Reach” gun to celebrate the game one month launch. It costs a single coin and is available for two weeks (one by the time you’re reading this).

  • You can play XCOM 2 for free this weekend with Xbox Live.

Industry News

  • In case you’ve been living under a rock, Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One October 26. Rockstar has released a new trailer which you can watch at the bottom of this article.

  • Oculus’s cheap standalone headset, Oculus Go, stealth released this week for $199. That’s a great bargain considering it doesn’t require a smartphone, PC, or game console tethered to it.

  • Valve has updated it’s latest beta client of Steam with official support for the Switch Pro Controller, which just so happens to be one of my favorite game pads around.

  • Here’s some good news for those of you who have Rock Band 4 on PS4 or Xbox One: Harmonix is bringing back Rock Band Network, which allowed content creators to import their own tracks for play (and most importantly, for sale) within the Rock Band series of games. The bad news? Due to licensing restrictions, none of your previously purchased tracks will carry over.

  • Capcom will release cartridge versions of Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X as limited runs costing $100 a piece alongside production house iam8bit, the two companies said today. Both runs will total 8500 units with 1000 blue editions for each run. To help justify the high price point, each game will come with instruction booklets and embossed boxing and 1K random buyers will also get translucent blue, glow-in-the-dark versions of the cartridges.

  • Remember the Atari VCS? Well we now know a little more about it straight from Atari. Here’s some of the new details we have:
    – powered by a custom-built chip by AMD based off the Radeon GPU tech
    – capable of outputting 4K HDR at 60fps
    – dual-band Wi-Fi
    – Bluetooth 5.0
    – USB 3.0
    – onboard data storage with room for expansion
    – Atari Vault pre-installed which is a collection of 100 “classic” Atari games.
Pre-orders will go live on IndieGoGo May 30 with two options available: a “time-limited” Collector’s Edition featuring the faux wood-front panelling and the $200 Onyx Edition, which is just black—neither of which include a controller in the box. If anyone actually buys any of these, the boxes are slated to ship in Spring 2019.

Word on the Street

  • Rumour has it that Witcher dev, CD Projekt RED, is bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to E3 this year
