The Atari VCS Still Makes no Sense and The Duke is Available for Purchase

Nintendo

  • Nintendo’s Miitomo app is closing down May 9, but you’ll still be able to create and/or edit your Mii so long as you sync yours with a Nintendo Account before Miitomo’s closure. Nintendo announced they’re creating a web-based editor so you can edit your little Mii.

  • We’ve heard reports of bricked Switch consoles that used third party docks after the 5.0 firmware update. Now, Switch owner Michael Skiathitis has filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. against Nyko after one of the company’s docks bricked his console. Nyko’s docks were popular upon release since they were both smaller and cheaper than Nintendo’s official offering. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this.

  • Nintendo company president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed Nintendo’s continued foray into the world of smartphone software has yet to reach a, “satisfactory profit point.” The only real success they’ve had is with Fire Emblem which brought in $85M within two months of release compared to their latest foray with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp which brought in a “measly” $20M.

Xbox

  • In case you weren’t aware, original Xbox designer Seamus Blackley and Hyperkin teamed up to make a new Duke for Xbox One and Windows 10. Well the biggest controller on the block, the Hyperkin Duke, is now available for purchase. The controller largely retains the design of the original while also adding two small shoulder buttons as well as the center Xbox logo dome of the original tweaked to now house an OLED display that shows the original Xbox startup animation.

Industry News

  • Ubisoft confirmed that a save file-corrupting bug found in South Park: The Fractured But Whole will be fixed in the game’s next update.

  • Capcom will release cartridge versions of Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X as limited runs costing $100 a piece alongside production house iam8bit, the two companies said today. Both runs will total 8500 units with 1000 blue editions for each run. To help justify the high price point, each game will come with instruction booklets and embossed boxing and 1K random buyers will also get translucent blue, glow-in-the-dark versions of the cartridges.

  • YouTube personality John “Totalbiscuit” Bain is retiring as a game critic, he announced today, citing his failing health and telling fans that he believes he doesn’t have much longer left. It’s a sad story indeed, as John is only 33 years old. If you’re going to reach out, please be respectful.

  • Remember the Atari VCS? Well we now know a little more about it straight from Atari. Here’s some of the new details we have:
    – powered by a custom-built chip by AMD based off the Radeon graphics technology
    – capable of outputting 4K HDR at 60fps
    – dual-band Wi-Fi
    – Bluetooth 5.0
    – USB 3.0
    – onboard data storage with room for expansion
    – Atari Vault pre-installed which is a collection of 100 “classic” Atari games.
Pre-orders will go live on IndieGoGo May 30 with two options available: a “time-limited” Collector’s Edition featuring the faux wood-front panelling and the $200 Onyx Edition, which is just black—neither of which include a controller in the box. If anyone actually buys any of these, the boxes are slated to ship in Spring 2019.
