Weekly Retro: 7/23 – 7/27

PlayStation

  • To this day one of my favorite PSVR titles is a single stage from the Playroom VR title. The game is called Robot Rescue and it’s basically Super Mario in VR—it’s really fun, charming, and colorful. Well I’m super stoked because the concept is becoming a full title called Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. It’s set to release October 2 for $39.99 and you can bet I’ll be picking it up.

  • Sly Cooper’s long-awaited animated series will start in October 2019, with a whopping 52 episodes commissioned. Each installment will be 11 minutes in length, with the ‘toon targeting both boys and girls aged between 6-years-old and 10-years-old. But let’s be real—the real audience will be long-time fans in their late 20’s early 30’s like ourselves.

  • Sony has finally removed the $5 minimum funding charge from the PlayStation Store, meaning if you want to buy something that’s less than $5 you can now be billed for the required amount instead of the $5 minimum.

Nintendo

  • When Paladins released on Switch back in June, it could only be downloaded by purchasing the Founder’s Pack. Those who have been waiting to jump in can now do so for free like on most other platforms with no need to spend $30.

  • SEGA is publishing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy on Switch in Japan. While I realize this isn’t monumental gaming news, I just found it oddly interesting.

  • Indie developer Jools Watsham revealed that Treasurenauts has been cancelled for Nintendo 3DS and is instead coming to Switch. This is no surprise considering Watsham’s sales figures for Chicken Little on 3DS were abysmal with the developer citing that the user base has almost entirely moved on to Nintendo’s latest console.

  • When Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate originally launched in Japan, Capcom teamed up with Nintendo for a special Zelda: Breath of the Wild collaboration. It’s now confirmed that the same content will be extended to the west.

Xbox

  • August’s Games with Gold have been revealed
    – Forza Horizon 2 Standard 10th Anniversary Edition (Aug 1-31)
    – For Honor Standard Edition (Aug 16 – Sept 15)
    – Dead Space 3 (360 title) (Aug 1-15)
    – Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two (360 title) (aug 16-31)

  • In a move that is starting to become a trend in the triple-A games industry, Turn 10 has announced that Forza Motorsport 7 will be slowly removing prize crates from the experience.

Industry News

  • Ninja Theory is bringing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31 as a free update for anyone that already bought the game on Steam. According to Ninja Theory, the VR version is almost identical to the original game, so this isn’t a side story, or some kind of tech demo you can blast through in 30 minutes. It will retain the original’s third-person perspective, keeping the player locked behind Senua. You will, however, be able to turn the headset to look around and gently guide the Pict warrior in a different direction.

  • Amazon UK has been sending emails to Prime subscribers informing them that pre-ordering video games will no longer entitle shoppers to a discount. The offer is to be withdrawn on August 7, no reason has been given for the retraction.

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider has gone gold, meaning it will make it’s September 14 release date.

  • NBA Playgrounds 2 was originally planned for a May 22 release, but just days beforehand a delay took place due to “exciting things” that were happening. Well, NBA Playgrounds 2 has finally resurfaced with 2K announcing today that it will publish the arcade-action sports game, which is seeing a slight name change to NBA 2K Playgrounds 2.

  • Hasbro is partnering with Blizzard on official Overwatch Nerf guns. The first of the bunch, the lengthily named Nerf Rival Overwatch Reaper Wight Edition, is due in 2019 and mimics Reaper’s iconic shotgun in looks, though not in functionality. The toy weapon carries eight of Nerf’s Rival rounds and includes both a ready indicator and a safety lock. There’s no word on pricing just yet.

  • Yooka and Laylee are joining guest characters like Juan from Guacamelee and the Hyper Light Drifter in Brawlout, a party fighting game currently on Nintendo Switch and PC and coming soon to PS4.

  • We’ve been waiting on Stardew Valley multiplayer for awhile now, and now we finally have a release date. According to the developer’s Twitter account, it will arrive on PC, Mac and Linux on August 1st. There’s also a new trailer to enjoy.

  • No Man’s Sky has released for Xbox One along with the free NEXT update and boy has it changed people’s perception of the game. Now it’s impossible to make everyone happy, but the title has seen the most people playing on Steam in a long time and the latest critic and customer reviews are positive. Players are praising the visuals (the clouds specifically) as well as the addition of multiplayer and the various quality of life improvements like easier inventory management.
